– Lilly Siskind and Caroline Shaefer scored three goals apiece for the Old Dominion women's lacrosse team in a 16-7 loss at Cincinnati in American Athletic Conference play on Friday. Siskind upped her season tally to 27 goals, the most on the team. The attack from West Chester, Pennsylvania entered the 2021 season with 25 career goals across two seasons. Shaefer notched her third hat trick of the season and shared the team high with four draw controls. Shaefer now has 41 draw controls this season, which is tied for the ninth-most in a season by a Monarch. All three of Shaefer's goals came from free position opportunities, and Siskind was 1-for-1 from eight meters out as well. As a team, the Monarchs (3-11, 1-6 American) scored five free position goals on eight attempts. The Bearcats (5-8, 1-6) broke out to an 4-0 advantage before Shaefer put ODU on the board at the 20:49 mark. She then scored a woman-up goal with 15:23 left in the first half to make the score 6-2 in favor of the hosts. The next two goals for the Monarchs came from the stick of Siskind, who slotted one home with 8:21 to play in the period to cut the deficit to 8-4. Ali Mills followed with her fifth goal of the year to draw ODU to within three, but the Bearcats closed out the half on a 4-0 run. Siskind completed her hat trick at the 27:31 mark of the second half. Following over 10 minutes without a goal by either side, Shaefer scored a shorthanded goal to make it 14-7. That would be the last goal of the day for the Monarchs, as UC scored the last two goals of the game. Cincinnati outshot ODU 33-18, but the two teams were nearly even in most other major categories. The Bearcats committed just one fewer turnover (28) than the Monarchs (29) and had 33 ground balls to ODU's 30, and the visitors had a narrow 13-12 edge in draw controls. Madison Corcoran paced Old Dominion with a career-high five ground balls. Lauren Carey, Maria Rekus and Jenna Peccia scooped up four ground balls each. Corcoran also shared the game high with a personal-best five caused turnovers. Sabrina Leatherwood and Peccia made four saves each. Kate Brocato started in goal for the Bearcats and made three stops in a winning effort. Peyton Mottice, Gianna Napoletano and Taylor Gysin had four points each to lead Cincinnati. The two sides play again on Sunday at noon.
