Playing in front of a huge crowd on the campus of Bishop England High School in Charleston, the nationally top-ranked Limestone College men's lacrosse team rode career days by three different players for a 16-7 regional win over Florida Tech on Saturday, February 22 at Cantey Stadium. GAME INFORMATION Score: No. 1 Limestone 16, Florida Tech 7 Records: No. 1 Limestone (3-0), Florida Tech (1-3) Location: Jack Cantey Stadium INSIDE THE BOXSCORE Senior Larson Sundown (Basom, N.Y.) dished out a career-high eight assists for nine points Senior Tyler Papa (Manlius, N.Y.) matched his career-high of five goals set a week ago Freshman Ethan Stannard (Caledon, Ontario) also tallied five goals on six shots Senior Clark Walter (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) added two goals and an assist Junior Gavin Kesselring (Atlanta, Ga.) posted a pair of scores to go with an assist Senior Dakota Kirsch-Downs (Odenton, Md.) won five faceoff attempts and scored a goal Senior Christopher Parrott (Havre de Grace, Md.) also won five attempts at the center dot Sophomore keeper Gary Cutler (Southfield, Mich.) finished with nine saves in 56 minutes Senior Matthew Plank (Eastport, N.Y.) recorded three caused turnovers and five groundballs Limestone edged the Panthers, 36-33, in shot attempts and 30-25 in groundballs The Saints went 4-of-5 on extra-man opportunities, while holding FIT to a 1-for-5 clip HOW IT HAPPENED First Quarter The Saints opened the contest with a laser from Papa – his seventh goal of the season – as Walter fed him for the man-up score, making it 1-0 early on. A few moments later, Stannard found the back of the net off an assist from Sundown to stake the Blue and Gold to a 2-0 lead with 9:31 remaining in the first. Florida Tech got on the board 30 ticks later, cutting the margin in half, 2-1, but Sundown would find Kesselring streaking towards the frame to put Limestone in front by a pair with one quarter in the books. Second Quarter Limestone ran off four straight goals to start the second period with Sundown having a hand in the first three scores. He assisted on back-to-back tallies from Papa and Walter before taking it himself for an extra-man goal – assisted by Kesselring – to put the Saints on top, 6-1, with 10:09 left in the first half. Kirsch-Downs then gave the Blue and Gold a 7-1 lead on the ensuring faceoff, working his way through the Panther defense for his second goal of the year. FIT scored two of the next three goals, but Sundown would again find Stannard for the third time in the half as Limestone grabbed a 9-3 cushion at the break. Third Quarter The Panthers opened the second half with an unassisted tally, but the Saints countered with six straight goals to put the game out of reach. Papa scored twice during the run, including one goal being assisted by freshman Grant Rodgers (Columbus, Ohio), before Sundown set up a pair of markers by Stannard. Walter also added a score during the decisive stretch while Kesselring buried an extra-man goal off an assist from junior Dorian Faster (New Freedom, Pa.), helping Limestone build up an 11-goal lead late in the third. Florida Tech added two scores in the closing minutes of the period to close the gap to 15-6. Fourth Quarter The Panthers extended their overall run to 3-0 a few ticks into the fourth quarter, but Papa would answer on the other end with his fifth goal of the day. That proved to be the final score of the game with both team combining for 11 turnovers in the final period, but the Saints had more than enough for the win. TURNING POINT Limestone scored four unanswered goals over the first five minutes of the second quarter to create some breathing room, pulling ahead 7-1. The Blue and Gold then used a 6-0 run over an eight-minute stretch in the third period to open up an insurmountable lead before cruising to a 16-7 decision in the fourth. NOTABLES Sundown, who had a seven-assist game against Indianapolis a year ago, missed tying the program single-game record by one dime – he is the only player to record eight assists in a game After scoring just once in the season opener, Papa has tallied 10 goals over the last two games Stannard poured in five goals in his first career start Florida Tech won 15-of-26 faceoff attempts, including a 7-for-10 showing in the third quarter Limestone went 15-of-18 on clear attempts on the day Saturday's meeting was only the second against the Panthers and the first since 2016 UP NEXT The Saints will continue their neutral site tour next week as they travel to Savannah, Ga. for a regional clash with Saint Leo University on Sunday, March 1 at Daffin Park. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
