– The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team was dominated on the face-off X on Saturday, and after a fast start those losses took their toll as the 13th-ranked Quakers fell to Keystone State rival Penn State at Franklin Field, 10-7. The Nittany Lions boast one of the top face-off men in the country in Gerard Arceri, and he was the difference on this day as he won a staggering 18 of 20 matchups. The Quakers threw three different players at Arceri, but no one could solve him. Despite his wins, it looked like it was going to be all Penn early. The hosts were up 3-0 after the first quarter. Penn's first came early on, as the Quakers took advantage of a Penn State turnover and James Farrell found Simon Mathias. The sophomore ripped home a shot, extending his point-scoring streak to 32 games. Tyler Dunn used a fantastic effort to clear the ball and eventually score to make it 2-0, and Sean Lulley finished a Reilly Hupfeldt feed for the final tally in the period. Penn opened the second-quarter scoring, as well, when Dunn again cleared the ball and found a wide-open Adam Goldner in front to make it 4-0. After that, though, it was all Penn State as the Nittany Lions essentially played "make it, take it" by scoring and then winning the ensuing faceoffs. By halftime, PSU was up 6-4, and they extended it to 7-4 early in the third. Penn ended a scoreless drought of nearly 21 minutes when Mathias came up with a loose ball and found senior Reilly Hupfeldt who converted to make the score 7-5 late in the period. However, an unfortunate sequence at the end of the quarter saw Penn take a shot that was saved, and Penn State turned it into a transition goal at the other end to take an 8-5 lead into the final period. That same scenario played out early in the fourth which gave the Lions a 9-5 advantage. Penn got two of those goals back, the first coming from the stick of senior Kevin McGeary and the second from Mathias off a Goldner feed with 4:41 left. However, that was all the scoring Penn could muster, and PSU used a straight rush from behind to thwart any thoughts of a comeback. Reed Junkin had 10 saves in the Penn cage, a number that was matched at the other end by PSU's Colby Kneese. The Nittany Lions outshot the Quakers on the day, 41-31. Up Next Penn faces Navy on Tuesday night in a neutral-site game in Sparks, Md. The Quakers and Midshipmen will face off at 7 p.m.
