Baldwin Wallace University senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference attack Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) broke his third school record of the season in the Yellow Jackets 16-12 loss to Capital University in the OAC opener inside George Finnie Stadium. With his first goal against the Crusaders (7-1, 1-0 OAC), Steinwachs became the school's all-time goal leader with the 108th score of his career. Senior attack Blake Bower (Lewis Center/Olentangy) led the Yellow Jacket (5-2, 0-1 OAC) offense with five goals and one assist for six points while Steinwachs added a total of two goals and two assists. Senior two-time All-OAC attack Mike Nanosky (Medina), junior midfielder Riley Mahon (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) and junior All-OAC midfielder Ben Kubiak (Wooster) each tallied one goal and one assist. Junior midfielder Luke Wyatt, junior attack CJ Hughes and senior attack Ryan Rampi all posted identical lines of three goals and one assist for Capital. Freshman attack Jack Scharner also netted a hat trick while senior midfielder Barrett Naugle chipped in one goal and two assists. After both BW and Capital initially got on the scoreboard, the Crusaders exploded on offense and ripped off a 6-0 run that spanned both the first and second quarters. Trailing 7-1, Nanosky finally put an end to the scoring blitz which was followed by another Yellow Jacket score, this time from sophomore midfielder Nicholas Nanosky (Medina). Capital answered with its own pair of goals to regain a 9-3 lead with 4:49 left but BW seemed to find a little rhythm late in the first half. Bower scored his second goal of the game and then assisted senior midfielder Thomas Moesch (Ithaca, N.Y.) as the Yellow Jackets got within four goals of the Crusaders at 9-5. However, Capital found the back of the net once more right as the buzzer sounded to take a 10-5 advantage into the intermission. With both teams' defenses locking in after halftime, the third quarter was scoreless until the 7:05 mark when Bower broke through the stalemate with an unassisted goal. Kubiak and Bower combined for a 3-0 BW run that trimmed the Crusaders' lead down to just 10-8 with 4:21 on the clock. Each team then added an additional goal for an 11-9 score heading into the final period. Capital scored the first two goals of fourth quarter as it built back up to a four-goal lead before Steinwachs netted his milestone goal with 10:53 remaining. Mahon followed with a rip of his own to bring BW back within two scores at 13-11; however, the Crusaders added three more goals in a 3:04 span for a comfortable 16-11 lead. Steinwachs had the game's final score at the 3:35 mark as the Yellow Jackets could not get a comeback going. BW concludes non-conference play on Wednesday, March 27, when the Yellow Jackets hit the road to take on the College of Wooster at 7 p.m. inside John P. Papp Stadium.
