(Lynn University) Date: Tuesday, March 14 Time: 12 p.m. The Lead: The Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team outscored Vassar College 7-2 in the second half en route to a decisive 11-4 victory in Boca Raton, Fla. Tuesday afternoon. Carter Hawthorne '19 registered seven points on two goals and five assists, while Harry Stanton '19 totaled six points on five goals and one assist to highlight the day for the Cardinals. FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS: The Brewers got on the board first with a goal from Michael Mullen at the 9:38 mark, but Wesleyan responded and scored four unanswered. Hawthorne scored back-to-back goals at the 8:11 and 7:26 marks, while Taylor Ghesquiere '19 tacked on another score before the end of the first quarter (:53) to put Wesleyan ahead 3-1 after the first. Ghesquiere capped off the run early in the second quarter (13:26), but it proved to be Wesleyan's final goal of the half. In a defensive battle, Vassar scored with 1:52 remaining in the half as the Cardinals held a 4-2 lead at the break. SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS: It was all Wesleyan in the second half as Stanton and Ghesquiere increased its lead to four with 9:27 remaining in the third. Vassar cut the deficit to three just over two minutes later, but back-to-back goals from Stanton followed by a score from Cole Turpin '18 capped off a five-goal third for the Cardinals as they entered the fourth quarter ahead, 9-4. Wesleyan's defense held the Brewers scoreless in the final 15 minutes of play as Hawthorne connected with Stanton for two insurance goals at the 9:13 and 6:09 marks. Stanton scored all of his game-high five goals in the second half. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Ghesquiere finished with three goals and three ground balls, while Ted Bergman '17 led the team with five ground balls, and Jason Gibson '17 and Ben Shively '18 finished with five each. Andres Rodriguez '18 recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Four different players scored a goal for Vassar and three recorded four ground balls. Austin Haymes totaled a team-high two caused turnovers. Bergman played all 60 minutes between the posts for Wesleyan and made 12 saves, while Matthew Boyd and Erik Mikelinich split time and made five and four saves, respectively. The Cardinals won 14-of-19 faceoffs and held a 37-33 edge in ground balls.
