- The Bard College men's lacrosse team lost to Skidmore College, 12-5, in a Liberty League game on Saturday. It was the final game in the careers of William Baffuto, a four-year starter and two-time All-Liberty League selection, and Jordan Fanelli, a graduate student who just joined the squad this year. Early on, it looked like Senior Day was going to be extra special for the Raptors. Bard carried the play early, The Raptors got four shots off before Skidmore took any - the three that were on goal were all saved by Tim Rahill (Wellesley, MA) - and then the Thoroughbreds got called for a cross-check, so Bard went a man-up. Rahill made one big save on Corey Rich off a turnover right in front of the goal to keep the game scoreless, and Skidmore killed off the rest of the penalty. With almost seven minutes gone in the game, Bard had outshot Skidmore, 8-1. When Skidmore did start producing some offense, Bard goalie Lyle Healey was sharp. He remained so all day. After two more big stops by Rahill, Skidmore finally broke through. Jason Shlonsky (Mount Sinai, NY) scored an unassisted goal with 2:03 left to make it 1-0, and that was the score after one quarter. Bard outshot Skidmore 11-7 in the first 15 minutes and had a 12-5 edge in ground balls. Consecutive goals less than a minute apart early in the second quarter made it 3-0, and Skidmore added two more to make it 5-0 with 7:49 remaining until halftime. The tide was turning. A brilliant individual effort by Peter Sojka gave Bard it's first goal to make it 5-1, and after Skidmore responded with another goal, Rich scooped up his own rebound after hitting the post and made it 6-2 with 2:51 left. It remained 6-2 at halftime. Each team scored twice in the third quarter to make it 8-4, and Skidmore closed the game out in the fourth quarter, outscoring Bard, 4-1. Eric Megnia (West Barnstable, MA) scored four goals for the Thoroughbreds (4-10, 1-6 Liberty League). Garrett Munck (McKinney, TX) added a goal and four assists. Rahill finished with 11 saves. Sojka scored three times and Rich scored twice for Bard (3-7, 0-5). Michael O'Donnell led Bard with six ground balls. Healey was great in goal for the Raptors, making 23 saves with a .657 save percentage. It will be determined soon if Baffuto makes All-Liberty League for the third time. The defender has been a stalwart back there for four years, is in the Bard record book in the caused turnovers and ground balls categories, and he'll be sorely missed.
