The UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team fell in America East action to UMBC, 16-11, on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium. With the loss, the River Hawks slip to 3-5 (2-3 AE) while the Retrievers improve to 4-3 (3-2 AE). Sophomore super duo, Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) and Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) tallied multi-goal efforts for the second straight game. The midfielder and attacker each notched four goals, with Liquori adding an assist as well. Rookie Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) recorded two late goals, while assisting on two others for a four-point total. Using the home field advantage, UMBC came out firing to take a strong 3-0 lead after just five minutes of play. However, after a Shaw goal to kick off the scoring, the River Hawks tallied five uninterrupted of their own over the next several minutes to take a 6-4 lead with 7:25 left on the clock. Liquori would score three consecutive times over the UMass Lowell attack to secure her hat trick before the first half horn. Although, the Retrievers would respond late in the final seconds off a free position and man-up opportunity to equalize the score 6-6. At the half, UMass Lowell outshot the hosts 15-11, including 10-8 on goal. The River Hawks caused 12 turnovers to UMBC's six. The second half continued to play in favor of the home squad, as UMBC posted the first goal just 45 seconds in to take the 7-6 advantage. Shaw's third and fourth tally would come in-between the Retriever attack, equalizing the score on two separate occasions. UMBC responded strong, stringing together their longest scoring run of the tilt, posting six consecutive goals to grasp a 14-8 lead. Brockbank capped off the night with two scores in the final nine minutes, followed by Liquori's fourth of the day. Sophomore Julia Napolitano (Oakdale, N.Y.) picked up a team-high three caused turnovers, while freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Brown (Southington, Conn.) scooped up a team best four grounds balls. Brown finished the day with six saves. Next weekend, the River Hawks are back at home as they take on Vermont at 2 p.m. on Cushing Field.
