Hosting their second of four-straight home games to open the 2019 season, the University at Albany women’s lacrosse team defeated Bucknell on Saturday, sending the Bison packing following an 18-9 victory. UAlbany got on the board quickly when Hannah Newman scored with 28:18 left in the first. Less than a minute later, Kendra Harbinger, who scored four goals in the season opener against Yale last weekend to earn America East Offensive Player of the Week honors, scored her first of five goals on the afternoon to give the Great Danes an early 2-0 lead. Bucknell got on the board for the first time with 24:53 remaining to cut the Danes’ lead in half. UAlbany responded with two more goals, from Harbinger on a free-position shot and from Kyla Zapolski 70 seconds later, to go up 4-1. Bucknell responded with two goals in 56 seconds to bring the game to 4-3 with 19:01 left in the first. UAlbany scored the next three goals to build a 7-3 lead with 14:30 to go in the half. After neither team scored for more than six minutes, Bucknell managed to break UAlbany’s run with a goal with 8:22 remaining. One minute later, Ally Alliegro scored on a free position attempt to put UAlbany back up by four. Nearly four minutes passed before Bucknell scored again, drawing within three with 3:57 remaining. UAlbany then rolled off three-straight goals before the half, taking a six-goal, 11-5 lead into the break. UAlbany narrowly out-shot Bucknell 17-13 in the first half, and held the advantage over the Bison in ground balls, 11-9. UAlbany goalkeeper Georgia Schneidereith, making her second-straight start this season, recorded six saves in the first 30 minutes. Bucknell held the advantage in the first half in draw controls, 10-7. The three goals to end the first half led into four-straight to start the second, allowing UAlbany to take a 15-5 lead with 18:22 left in the game following the Danes’ combined 7-0 scoring run. Bucknell temporarily stopped the running clock with 17:17 to go, cutting the lead to nine, before UAlbany scored two straight to go up 11 with 11:45 remaining. Trailing 17-6, Bucknell rolled off three straight goals in the final six minutes, coming as close as 17-9 with 1:01 left. UAlbany scored one final time, Kathryn Sancilio unassisted, with 27 seconds remaining to bring the final score to 18-9. Harbinger finished the game with five goals and one assist. Zapolski added three goals, and Paige Werleau, Sancilio, and Alliegro added two apiece. Sam Tortora and Werlau each recorded two assists. As a team, UAlbany out-shot Bucknell 40-22 for the game, including 23-9 in the second half.
