HOW IT HAPPENED The Beacons late rally capped-off a six goal fourth quarter, while defensively they held the Pilgrims to just two scores. After Sean Largay put NEC up 11-8, the Beacons responded almost immediately winning the following face-off. They would then sprint up the field where Cariveau waited patiently for a perfectly timed pass from Matt Murphy (Watertown, Mass.). Forty-eight seconds later, Cariveau scored a highlight real spin-a-rama goal. Transfer Clay Arnold (Syracuse, N.Y.) saw Cariveau cutting in front of the NEC goal and fired the ball into the congested area. With a defender on his back Cariveau did a complete 360 and in the process caught and scored the ball to make it a one goal affair (11-10). Just over two minutes later Arnold got on in the scoring with his second of the night to tie it at 11-11. Kroy Arnold (Syracuse, N.Y.) would win the face-off, but a quick Beacons turnover following their timeout nearly gave the Pilgrims the chance they needed to retake the lead. However freshman goalie Alex Surette (Melrose, Mass.) came-up with a huge stop, and quickly started the counter attack, that would lead Cariveau's third goal to cap-off the rally. Josh Holmes (Weymouth, Mass.) assisted on the game-winner to end his afternoon, which consisted of two goals and an assist. On the clincher, Holmes made a tremendous pass as he was falling to the ground with a NEC player right on his back. Now trailing for the first time all afternoon, NEC would go to their number one face-off man Mike Ring to try and lead his team to a rally of-their-own. Ring won the face-off, to give the Pilgrims attack another shot at Surrette. However a Murphy caused turnover right by the crease, and a quick counter by Surrette put the Beacons in NEC territory before anyone knew what had happened. The Beacons would try to maintain possession as time quickly counted but a near costly turnover with 56 seconds left in regulation, made for a very tense final moments. Luckily, Surrette was up for the challenge as he stopped the final NEC attack with a huge save with just 17 seconds left in the game. He would send the ball the length of the field, where he would find an open teammate, as UMB finally clinched the victory. Through the first quarter the two teams were evenly matched with both squads scoring twice. In the second, NEC began to distance themselves from UMB as they tacked on four goals, while only allowing one Beacons goal to go into the halftime break with a 6-3 lead. In the third both teams managed to find the back of the net three times setting-up the dramatic fourth frame. Surrette ended his collegiate debut with a combined nine saves, while NEC's William Platt finished with 15 stops. Kroy Arnold went 14-for-20 from the face-off dot in his Beacons debut, while Ring finished 9-for-23 for the Pilgrims. Arnold also led the Beacons with nine ground balls, while Ring finished with a team-best seven. All-Conference honoree Jack Dillon finished second on the team with six ground balls, and had New England College was led by the standout play of Matt Richard who had an impressive 10 points (1g, 9a) in his 2017 season opener.
