WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team (6-8, 1-5 PL) put up a season-high 42 shots but struggled to capitalize against a tough Colgate (6-7, 4-2 PL) backline as the Eagles fell to the Raiders, 13-11. HOW IT HAPPENED Leah Brennan tied the single-season program record with her team-high five draw controls, bringing her season total up to 64 to sit alongside Madison Hoon (2016) in the record book. Emma Vinall continues to inch closer to the program record for single-season points. She earned a game-high seven with her four goals and three assists to land at 55 for the season, only seven away from Gina Riitano's record from 2003. Brennan and Peyton Smith also added hat trick performances with three goals each while Amanda Medjid added one. Casey Harkins pitched in a game-high four assists, followed by one from Kendall Goldblum and Smith. Fiona Geier, who earned her 500th career save during the loss to Boston University last weekend, picked up six saves in her 60 minutes of play. The Eagles held the advantage in shots, 42-28, and ground balls, 21-14, but Colgate controlled the center circle with 16 draw controls to AU's 10. American gave up only 12 turnovers while forcing 21 from the Raiders, and earned nine assists on its 11 goals. Colgate had eight players add to the final tally led by a three-goal effort from Noelle Patterson. Danielle Van Calcar pulled down a team-high eight draw controls. Goalkeeper Samantha Croston put up an impressive performance, picking up nine saves to help hold the Eagles' offense at bay. Colgate opened scoring within the first minute, but the Eagles were quick to find their tempo as Vinall put away a quick pair of goals, both off assists from Harkins, to give AU its first of two leads in the first half. It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the remainder of the first half, with American regaining the lead once more after goals from Smith and Brennan. But Colgate responded in kind and the Eagles were forced to play catch-up for the final 10 minutes of the half before entering the break at a 6-6 draw. By the end of the half, the two teams had knotted the score six times and switched leads four times. A slow start to the second half put American on its heels, though, as the Raiders put up a 4-0 run in the opening 12 minutes to take a 10-6 lead. The Eagles matched them goal for goal in the final 17 minutes of play with goals from Brennan, Smith, and Vinall, but were unable to break any closer than the final two-goal deficit. NEXT UP The Eagles will be on the road on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. draw at No. 14 Navy before returning to Jacobs Complex for the home finale and senior day celebration on Saturday, April 20, with a noon start against Holy Cross. AU will conclude its regular-season slate on Friday, April 26, at Lehigh. For the latest on American University Lacrosse, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_Lacrosse.
