University of Richmond freshman attack Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) scored a career-high five goals in a span of 11:54 of the second half as the Spiders pulled away from hosting Mount St. Mary's 14-7 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Waldron Family Stadium. The 20th-ranked Spiders scored nine out of the last 11 goals of the game, including a dominant 6-1 margin in the fourth quarter to improve to 3-3 on the year. Richmond's defense was strong as well, forcing the Mountaineers into 23 turnovers in the loss led by redshirt sophomore defender Ray Baran (Berwyn, Pa.), who finished with a team-high seven ground balls. Connell's five goals marks the fourth time in his first six career games he has scored at least three goals. He becomes the 11th Spider all-time to score five or more goals in a game and his five goals is tied for third-most in a single game in program history. He has scored a team-high 19 goals in his first six games in college, ranking second in the country among freshman goal scorers. He scored three of his goals on the man-up opportunity, giving him seven this season which ranks first in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse. Junior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) scored a team-high six points in the win, notching four goals and two assists. He moved into sole possession of second place all-time in program history for career points scoring, surpassing Mitch Goldberg. Lanchbury now has 140 career points as the junior has scored 92 goals and dished out 48 assists in 40 career games. Freshman Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) made his first career start and scored his first two career goals in the win. Senior defender Jack Cook (Mechanicsville, Va.) scored on a long-stick goal for the second-straight game, the first two goals of his career. Cook had gone the first 35 games of his career without a goal until two in the past two games. Junior goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) tallied 10 saves in the victory, allowing a season-low seven goals against. The victory was the Spiders' first this season on the road and improved them to 5-1 all-time against the Mountaineers in program history. The first half was a defensive battle with the Spiders hold a 3-2 lead after the first 30 minutes of play. Mount St. Mary's (2-4) scored the first two goals of the game before the Spiders answered back with three-straight. Lanchbury scored two goals in the first half surrounding Cook's long-pole goal for the halftime lead. Richmond scored the first two of the second half, taking a 5-2 lead as Lanchbury secured a hat trick and Young recorded the first goal of his career. The Mountaineers answered back with three-straight of their own, tying the game once again at 5-5. Young scored his second of the game and the first of four man-up goals for the Spiders while Connell scored his first of the game at the 2:04 mark of the third quarter. After a Mountaineer goal with 1:23 remaining, Lanchbury scored his fourth with four seconds left in the third. The flood gates opened in the fourth as the Spiders scored six goals, including three on the man-up opportunities. Connell scored the first two of the fourth before Ryan Dunn (Towson) and Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) scored unassisted goals. Connell capped the scoring with two man-up goals in a span of 1:36 giving the Spiders the seven-goal victory. Richmond opens Southern Conference play Saturday when it travels to Lexington, Va., for a matchup against VMI. Face-off is set for noon.
