In their first game of the 2021 season, Winthrop took care of Presbyterian 19-6 at Eagle Field. 10 different Eagles scored in the victory that marked the program's first win in over a year. Game Recap Things started off slow for both teams, but McKenna Blick got the Eagles on the board early with a goal just over seven minutes in the game. Presbyterian answered back when Abby Edmisten scoring on the Blue Hose very next possession evening the score at 1-1. Seniors Olivia Deaver and Lauren Morris fired in back-to-back goals at the eight-minute mark to put the Eagles back in front, 3-1. After a Blue Hose goal, and a brief scoring drought, Winthrop's Savanah Paton and Alyssa Angelo each found the back of the net. Grayson McKenzie scored her first collegiate goal at the 9:02 mark and became the first member of the Eagles highly-touted recruiting class to get on the scoresheet this season. Winthrop scored 9 unanswered goals before Presbyterian was able to muster another goal of their own when Ana Booth scored with two minutes left in the first half. Olivia Deaver scored with 30 seconds left on the clock to give the Eagles a 13-3 lead heading into the half. After a Blue Hose goal to start the second half, Winthrop scored 6 straight goals to make it 19-4. Madison Foti was able to get one back for Presbyterian with 3:30 remaining in the half. The Blue Hose scored again in the closing minutes, but the game ended, 19-6. Notables Lauren Morris returned to action after missing last season due to a knee injury. Morris picked up right where she left off back in 2019 and scored 3 goals against the Blue Hose. After only scoring twice in her freshman season, Alyssa Angelo found the back of the net four times in Sunday's season opener. The sophomore is expected to play a larger role this season after only starting four games in the shortened 2020 season. Bianca Tedesco scored or assisted on 6 of Winthrop's first 8 goals. The senior led the Eagles in assists during the shortened 2020 season. After starting her career at Mercer, Molly Dankowski made her Winthrop debut Sunday and scored her first goal as an Eagle. The junior scored two goals in her two seasons at Mercer. Both Kelsey Johnson and Sara McGuire saw time in goal for the Eagles. The pair split time in goal during the 2020 season. Freshmen Grayson McKenzie and Madison Daziel each scored their first goal of their collegiate career in the victory. Winthrop lacrosse has now won each of their 10 matchups all-time against Presbyterian. Looking Ahead Winthrop returns to action February 20th against Coastal Carolina at Eagle Field. The Eagles have won each of their eight contests with the Chanticleers in program history with the last victory occurring on March 3, 2019.
