The Panthers picked up their second win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season with a 16-12 win over No. 19 Duke • Freshman Abby Hormes scored a season-high six goals to lead HPU • Senior Erica Perrotta tallied a hat trick, which gives her 130 goals for her career and setting a new school record HIGH POINT, N.C.—The No. 20/24 High Point University women's lacrosse team used a big second half to pull away from No. 19/18 Duke, 16-12, Monday evening (April 9) at Vert Stadium. After Duke (7-6) scored the first two goals of the second half, the Panthers (10-2) answered with a 5-0 run and outscored the Blue Devils, 7-3, in the second frame for their ninth consecutive win. "Right now we're really focused on competing every time we step on the field, no matter who we are playing against," HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell said. "It was a huge win for us against Duke, who is a very well coached and a really good team. I'm really proud of our composure tonight and just the way the girls competed throughout 60 minutes." The win is the Panthers' fourth win over a nationally-ranked team in program history and the second this season after defeating then-No. 21 Notre Dame, 13-7, on March 14. Freshman Abby Hormes led the way for High Point, scoring a season-high six goals, tied for the second-most in a single game in program history. With three goals against Duke, senior Erica Perrotta broke the school record for career goals with 130. Mackenzie Carroll (2011-14) previously held the record with 129 goals. Junior Maggie Williams added five points on a goal and four assists, while fellow junior Samantha Herman registered a hat trick along with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. On the defensive end, senior Olivia Nostrant recorded five ground balls along with three caused turnovers, while sophomore Jill Rall made eight saves for the second game in a row to earn her ninth win of the season. In the first half, the Panthers jumped out to a 3-1 lead on goals from Hormes and Perrotta, but Duke used a 7-2 run to take an 8-5 lead with 10:10 left in the half. The Panthers then answered with a 4-1 run, including a natural hat trick from Hormes, to end the half and send the game into the break tied, 9-9. The Panthers return to action with a Big South matchup at Presbyterian on Wednesday (April 11). First draw in Clinton, S.C., is set for 4 p.m.
