Hosting UMass Lowell for its Nickerson Field opener Saturday, the Boston University women's lacrosse team put together a complete effort in sinking the River Hawks, 17-12, as Lauren Morton earned her first career victory as a collegiate head coach. Kailey Conry recorded her 100th career assist in the first half, her fourth and final of the day, while adding two goals as part of a six-point day. Along with Conry, four other Terriers recorded multi-goal games, while Kaitlin Belval dominated on the draw with seven decisions. In net, Kennady Smith made two saves and earned her first career win. How it Happened Kelly Mathews kicked things off by scoring just over two minutes into the game, while Emily Vervlied and Catherine McAuley slotted in free position chances to put the score at 4-1. The River Hawks crept back into the game with two straight strikes to make it a one-goal game midway through the first. Kailey Conry fed both Ava Barry and Bridget McCarthy to put the lead back to three. Barry struck again by beating UMass Lowell's keeper with a shot right in front of the crease, and Tonianne Magnelli followed by taking the opening draw and motored down the rest of the field for an emphatic score to cap a 4-0 run. Mackenzie Howe netted her first goal since her freshman campaign before Magnelli intercepted a River Hawk clear attempt and found Conry in transition to put the the Terriers in command, 10-4, at the half. BU erupted for up another offensive explosion to start the second half, led by Kelly Mathews and Conry solo shots, while Irvine connected with Belval to guide a 3-0 spurt within the opening eight minutes. Lexi Lewis and Hannah Kenneally scored within a 49-second span to give BU its largest lead of the game, 15-6, with 16:16 remaining. Alexandra Hark all but put the game away with seven minutes left with her first career goal. Game Notes Barry and Mathews are the lone Terriers to record multi-point games in each of BU's first two games this season. Bianca Smith came on in net for the final 24 minutes and made a pair of saves. Vervlied and Magnelli led the Terriers in ground balls (3) and tied for the team lead in caused turnovers (2) along with Nicole Foringer and McAuley. Three different Terriers recorded their first career points, as Kenneally and Hark put in their first goals, and Meghan Hickey handed out her first assist. Up Next The Terriers will return to the road once again, this time heading down to Hartford for an 11 a.m. start on Saturday, Feb. 23.
