The No. 24/RV Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (5-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) fell, 16-11, to the No. 6/6 University of Florida Gators (7-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST matchup on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. The contest marked the fifth and final contest in a five-game homestand for the Blue & Gray. “We weren’t consistent in both half,” said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. “We started out really strong, playing with a lot of confidence and wearing them down. In the second half, we made too many mistakes and they made plays. Our offense was very stagnant and our defense didn’t execute the game play on a consistent basis.” Junior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) led the way for the Hoyas with four goals and one assist for five points in the contest as six Hoyas tallied a point in the game. Senior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) managed three goals along with a pair of caused turnovers, while junior midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) posted two goals as well as four draw controls. The Hoyas were outshot, 36-29, and pulled in 13 draw controls to Florida’s 16. Georgetown committed 19 turnovers while forcing 15 from the Gators. Junior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) had eight saves to her credit in the cage. The Hoyas opened the scoring in the first minute as Gebhardt hit back-to-back goals. The first was a free position shot and the second was a picture perfect feed by sophomore attacker Emily Ehle (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy). Whitehurst added a free position shot at 24:45 as the Blue & Gray took the 3-0 lead. Florida answered back with a pair of scores, but Whitehurst’s unassisted tally at 16:59 gave the Hoyas some breathing room. The Gators cut the GU lead to one, 4-3, but Seibel scored on an Ehle assist and sophomore midfielder Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) added a free position shot within two minutes of each other to make it 6-3. At the 11:54 mark, Florida scored an unassisted goal, but it was freshman midfielder Caroline Frock (Westminster, Md./Westminster) who connected on her second goal of the year after forcing a turnover to give the Hoyas the 7-4 lead. Gebhardt managed one more for the hat trick, but a Gator goal late in the period made it 8-5 at the half. Florida scored off of the opening draw as the Gators would not go away quietly. Following a big stop from Chomo, the Hoyas came down and Gebhardt fed Seibel for her second of the contest. The Gators would answer with a pair of quick scores to cut the lead to one, 9-8, and force a GU timeout. Seibel took a feed from Lynch at the 21:15 mark to reenergize the Blue & Gray and put the Hoyas ahead by two. On the ensuing draw, the Gators scored, but Gebhardt dodged a pair of defenders to nail her fourth of the game making the score 11-9. After a six-minute drought from both squads, it was Florida that found the back of the cage twice to tie it up at 11 with 13:10 remaining in the contest. These goals would spark a 7-0 run to end the game as the Hoyas could not find the answer eventually falling, 16-10. The Hoyas will be back in action on Wednesday as the squad travels to the No. 2/4 University of Maryland for the 7 p.m. contest against the Terps. It marks GU’s first road contest since February 24. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
