Behind a balanced all-around effort, the Boston University women's lacrosse team won its third straight game as it overmatched Lafayette, 18-8, Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Patriot League Midfielder of the Week Emily Vervlied paced the Terriers with a career-high five goals and caused a game-high five turnovers. Tonianne Magnelli was also impressive all-around, as she collected six ground balls and won six draw controls. Kennady Smith, the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, notched 10 saves for her third double-digit save effort over the last four games. How it Happened Lexi Lewis struck 46 seconds into play before Kaitlin Belval and Vervlied pounded in their own unassisted scores to put the score at 3-0 three minutes in. Lafayette worked its way back from the early hole, chipping away to make it one-goal game with 21:31 left in the half. Hannah Kenneally dodged past a defender from behind the cage and finished with a diving score to put the Terriers back ahead by two at the 20-minute mark. Following an answer from the Leopards, Vervlied netted her own diving goal to put the lead back to two. Kenneally ripped another solo score on a rebound before Chrisitne Carugati spun off a defender for a top-shelf strike, regaining the three-goal lead with just over five minutes left until the break. Makenzie Irvine and Belval sealed a 4-0 Terrier run over the final eight minutes to hold a 9-4 advantage as the first half came to a close. Lewis opened the second half with another unassisted goal before Lafayette caught the hot hand, reeling off a 3-0 run to trim the scoreboard to 10-7 with 19:46 left. However, Lewis continued to find the back of the net, ripping her third goal of the game, while Belval sprinted from the midfield in transition for her own hat trick, furthering BU's command to 12-7. Irvine, Barry, Vervlied and Catherine McAuley iced the game with a 4-0 run over the final six minutes. Game Notes Just two of BU's first 15 goals were assisted. Lewis netted her second straight hat trick and Belval poured in her fourth-straight multi-goal game. BU improve to 7-0 in the all-time series against Lafayette. Mackenzie Howe led the Terriers with seven draw controls as they held a 16-11 advantage for the game. Lafayette went 0-for-3 on free position shots, as Smith saved the first two while its final free position shot hit the post. Up Next The Terriers will host Colgate on Wednesday, March 27 at 5 p.m.
