The Brown women's lacrosse team was defeated by Ohio State, 15-14, in overtime on Monday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The Bears had a 14-13 lead with 23 second remaining in regulation before the Buckeyes scored with five second left on the clock and later won the game with a score at 1:12 in the first period of the sudden victory overtime. Sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) again led Brown (1-1) in scoring with six goals and two assists while senior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) (2G, 1A), freshman Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.) (2G), junior Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) (2G) and sophomore Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) (1G, 1A) added multipoint efforts. "It was a really competitive game," said head coach Keely McDonald. "Both teams played hard on both sides of the ball. I am proud of the effort of our team. We will learn from the game and attack practice this week." The two teams traded two-goals runs to open the contest with Ohio State (3-0) gaining a 2-0 lead before sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) (21:52, free position) and senior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (17:28) tied the game for Brown. After a goal from the Buckeyes, Fowler tied the game at 14:14 with a man-up score and Mosenthal gave the Bears their first lead at 5:18 with her second on a free position shot. Ohio State then put together a three-goal run to take a 6-4 lead. Mosenthal completed a hat trick before the end of the frame (0:09) on a man-up free position to pull Brown within one (6-5). The Buckeyes carried a 17-11 lead in shots for the first and also had a 7-5 edge in draw controls. Baley Parrott provided the first goal of the second half (free position) for a two-goal Buckeye advantage before Moinuddin and Jeschke (free position) netted goals at 22:45 and 19:15, respectively, to knot the game, 7-7. After an Ohio State goal at 14:32, Brown went on a 3-0 run to retake the lead, with two goals coming from DeGennaro. Mosenthal later added her fifth score (free position) of the game at 9:08 to give the Bears a 12-10 lead. The Buckeyes would then score three-straight to take a 13-12 lead. Mosenthal put in her sixth goal on a free positon to tie it, 13-13, at 2:37 and Jeschke pulled the Bears ahead with her tally with 23 seconds remaining. Parrott scored her sixth goal of the game for Ohio State with just five seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime with a score of 14-14. The second ended with the Bears holding a 18-17 advantage in shots while each team registered eight draw controls. Brown would win the draw control to open overtime but the Buckeye defense would force a turnover. Liza Hernandez then won the game for Ohio State with a free position score with 1:12 left in the extra period. Senior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) collected six draw controls in the contest while Jeschke and freshman Erin Schafer (Pleasanton, Calif.) each chipped in four. Scafer along with junior Emily Fryer (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) led the defense with three caused turnovers apiece. Freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) finished the game with a career-high 10 saves in net while her counterpart, Jill Rizzo, also made 10 stops. Parrott paced Ohio State with six goals while Liza Hernandez recorded three goals and two assists. The Bears will remain on the road and next travel to Iona on Saturday, Feb. 23 for a 2:00 p.m. game.
