The Brown women's lacrosse team was defeated by Bryant, 14-13, in the battle for the Ocean State Cup on a chilly Wednesday evening at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears looked like they would pull away, opening the second half with three-straight goals for a 10-7 lead, but the Bulldogs would counter with a three-goal run and outscore Brown a combined 7-3 the rest of the way to take the victory. "Bryant played well as a team," said head coach Keely McDonald. "We need to be more disciplined to close out the game together. I look forward to practice." Junior Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) had another strong performance offensively for Brown (2-3), tying her career high with five goals while sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) recorded her third-consecutive hat trick. The game was tightly contested early on with four ties en route to a score of 4-4 before Brown recorded four-straight scores, which included two quick tallies by DeGennaro (15:52, 15:34) for a 7-4 Bear advantage. Bryant (1-2) would then close the last six minutes of the half with a three-goal run to tie things at 7-7. Shots and draw controls were close for each team in the first with Brown holding a 16-15 and 8-7 edge in both columns, respectively. Each team put in two free position goals with the Bears 2-for-4 and the Bulldogs 2-for-7. Brown opened the second half with three-straight goals from senior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (29:25), DeGennaro (26:59) and freshman Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.) (24:48) to build a 10-7 lead. The Bulldogs then clawed back to tie the contest, 10-10, it in a little over four minutes. Mosenthal pulled the Bears ahead (11-10) with her third score of the day at 17:40 before Bryant created separation with four straight score, the final two from Jess DeMeo, to take a 14-11 lead. The Bears weren't done themselves as DeGennaro pulled Brown within two (14-12) with a free position goal at 4:15. Senior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) added a goal with 35 seconds remaining for a one-score deficit. Following a Brown timeout, the Bears won the ensuing draw control and had a chance to tie it, but a shot by Moinuddin was saved and a succeeding opportunity was shut down by the Bulldog defense. Giana Kapoosuzian came up big for Bryant in the second half, recording eight saves. Kapoosuzian finished the game with 11 saves while freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) also turned away 11 shots, her fourth game of the season with double digit saves. Brown outshot Bryant in the second, 22-16, but the Bulldogs won the draw control battle with a 9-5 advantage. Each team again put in two free position goals, with the Bryant 2-for-4 and the Bears 2-for-8. Caitlin Breglia led Bryant with three goals and one assist while DeMeo contributed a hat trick. In addition to DeGennaro and Mosenthal, Fowler (2A) and Parisella (2G) both notched multipoint efforts. The Bears next travel to Annapolis, Md. to take on No. 12 Navy on Saturday, March 9 at 12:00 p.m. Video of all Brown women's lacrosse home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
