ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 12 Navy women's lacrosse team (5-2) posted an 18-12 victory over Brown (2-4) on Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. The Mids trailed 3-1 early in the first half, but closed out the final 24 minutes of the half on a 10-2 run to take control of the game. "I am proud of our team," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "We had a tough loss to the No. 1 team in the country on Wednesday and were able to rebound back against a really hungry Brown team that is tough in their conference. With some of their key attacking players, we had our hands full. We were able to get the gap right before halftime and at the end of the game. I am proud of our team. Now is an opportunity after going back-to-back-to-back-to-back games to rest two and get reset and reunited with several good days of practice before starting conference play." Offensively, the Mids were led by Kelly Larkin (Alexandria, Va.) and Andie O'Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.). The duo combined to score 11 of Navy's 18 goals on the day with Larkin netting a team-high six goals and O'Sullivan posting a season-best five scores. Freshman Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.) also chipped in her first collegiate hat trick, scoring three goals. Larkin paced the team with three assists, while Kayla Harris (Annapolis, Md.) and Annalise Heyward (Charlotte, N.C.) added two helpers apiece. Roelofs edged her name in the Navy record books as the freshman pulled down 11 of the Mids' 21 draw controls on the day. Her performance ties for the seventh best in a game in school history. Defensively, Gab Harchelroad (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned her fourth victory of the season. The senior notched five saves, while allowing 10 goals with a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover to her credit. Abbi Young (Alamo, Calif.) also saw some time between the pipes notching a pair of saves, while allowing two goals. Hannah Downey (Coronado, Calif.) led the team with three ground balls, while Natalie Irwin (Annandale, Va.) and Harchelroad added two apiece. The defense tallied five caused turnovers in the game with five different players contributing one each. Brown was the first team score, but the Mids responded with O'Sullivan's first goal to tie the game at 1-1. The Bears scored back-to-back goals to go up 3-1 with 24:07 remaining in the first half. Navy answered with a 5-0 run to take the lead and a 10-2 run to close the half. Roelofs started the 5-0 run with a free-position goal. She followed tha with a goal off a helper from Larkin. Tied at three, O'Sullivan took a pass from Heyward and buried it in the back of the net to give Navy the lead, which it would not relinquish. Roelofs earned the hat trick with a goal off a Harris assist and Heyward concluded the run with a free-position goal. Following a Bears' goal, Navy responded with a Heyward goal. O'Sullivan netted back-to-back goals to put the Mids up 9-4 with under 3:30 to play in the half. Larkin converted a free-position opportunity for her first goal of the game. Brown scored with 68 second on the clock, but Larkin sent the Midshipmen into halftime up 11-5 with her second goal of the game. In the second half, Brown chipped into the lead with a pair of goals to open the period, but Larkin and Marina Lazarides (Westminster, Md.) answered with goals to keep the six-goal margin. The Bears used three goals to cut the deficit to 13-10, but Navy pushed the lead back to five with goals from O'Sullivan and Larkin. Brown scored to cut the margin to 15-11, but Larkin and Nicole Victory (Issaquah, Wash.) extended the advantage to 17-11. The Bears scored with 1:42 to play, but Larkin closed out the scoring with her sixth goal of the game to provide the final margin of 18-12. Navy returns to action on Saturday, March 16, as the Midshipmen travel to Colgate to start Patriot League play. Opening draw is slated for 12:00 p.m. and live stats and live video will be available.
