PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team defeated Yale, 14-11, to pick up its first conference win in its Ivy League home opener on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The victory marks the Bears' first over the Bulldogs since the 2011 season. After trailing by one in a tightly contested first half, Brown (3-4, 1-1 Ivy League) outscored Yale (4-3, 0-2 Ivy League) 8-4 in the second with a five-goal run while holding Yale scoreless for over 19 minutes. "It was an awesome team win," said head coach Keely McDonald. "We played hard and together on offense and on defense. I am proud of how we refocused for the second half. I can't wait for practice this week." Freshman Sophia DeRosa (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) had a career day to lead the Bears, scoring her first collegiate goal in the contest and ending with four scores. Sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) also added four tallies, her fourth-straight game with at least a hat trick. On the other side of the ball, freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) concluded the afternoon with seven saves and shut down Yale in the second half by turning away five shots while allowing just four goals. The first half was back-and-forth with the Bulldogs gaining a 7-6 edge after 30 minutes of play. Yale benefitted from an 11-3 advantage in draw controls and a 15-9 lead in shots. Both teams traded goals to open, with DeRosa netting her first collegiate tally at 16:02 to bring the contest to 4-4. Yale claimed a two-goal lead with two straight including a man-up score at 7:24 by Rachel Anderson. Two more scores by DeRosa at 6:26 and 5:18 again knotted the game, 6-6, before Jill Gollob sent the Bulldogs into the break with a 7-6 lead with a goal at 3:51. Gollob added the second half's first score at 28:05 for an 8-6 Yale advantage before Brown regained the lead (9-8) with three-consecutive scores, two coming from Mosenthal (26:26, 24:11). Anderson tied it at 20:52 before the Bears pulled away with five-straight goals while holding the Bulldogs scoreless for over 19 minutes. Mosenthal put in the first tally on a free-position score to start the run at 19:41 with freshman Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.) (19:00), DeRosa (16:10), Mosenthal (13:38) and freshman Kelsey Shea (Vienna, Va.) (12:05) scoring in succession. Yale scored at 1:43 and 0:40 to close out the game and bring the contest to its final of 14-11. The Bears outshot the Bulldogs 14-12 in the second and improved on the draw control to trail by just one (7-6). Sophomore Mason Warble (Bronxville, N.Y.) and freshman Erin Schafer (Pleasanton, Calif.) each caused four turnovers on the afternoon while senior Olivia Lee (Bethesda, Md.) and freshman Alaina Parisella (Chatham, N.J.) both chipped in two. Amelia Drake made a total of five saves while starting for Yale in net while Clare Boone made one stop in 16:22 minutes of action in the second half, receiving the loss. Olivia Markert led Yale with four goals and four assists while Anderson and Gollob each added three goals. The Bears will continue Ivy League action and travel to No. 9 Princeton on Saturday, March 23 for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
