OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Three players finished with three goals apiece as seventh-ranked Stevenson University pulled away late for a 16-12 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over No. 20 Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday night at Mustang Stadium. Senior Kyle D'Onofrio and sophomore JT Thelen led Stevenson (2-1) with three goals and an assist apiece, with D'Onofrio also recording three ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior Kyle Karsian also scored three times and registered four ground balls, while freshman Ethan Christensen notched two goals, two assists and three ground balls. Senior Tyler Fuhrman scored twice, while junior Brandon Watson added a goal and three assists. Senior Wade Korvin posted a goal and an assist while picking up four ground balls. Senior Parrish Young had the other Mustang tally. Conor Caffrey and Max Tennant led Ohio Wesleyan (2-4) with three goals apiece. Three of the Battling Bishops' four losses have come to nationally-ranked foes. Stevenson never trailed and led 13-11 heading into the fourth quarter, but saw its lead cut to 13-12 at the 9:07 mark on a Luke Leyden man-up tally. Korvin reclaimed a two-goal lead for the Mustangs with a great individual effort with 7:24 left, then Watson scored his first goal in a Stevenson uniform at the 5:49 mark to make it a three-goal game. Karsian closed out the scoring with 4:14 left when he picked up an OWU turnover in the Bishop zone and put it past goalie Joey Sichenzia. The Mustangs appeared poised to put the game away in the third quarter, scoring three goals in a span of 2:25 to take a 13-9 lead. Thelen scored at 4:41,followed by a Christensen tally at 3:31. Fuhrman delivered a man-up goal off a feed from Thelen with 2:16 left to give Stevenson its first four-goal lead of the night. The four-goal cushion was short-lived, as Leyden picked up the ensuing faceoff and scored seven seconds later to make it 13-10, then a goal with 52 seconds left made it 13-11 heading to the final frame. Ohio Wesleyan twice cut the Mustang lead to one earlier in the third quarter, scoring at the 12:19 mark to make it 9-8. Fuhrman scored with 7:37 left in the third to make it a 10-8 game, but Caffrey scored with 5:53 left in the frame to cut the lead to one once again. The second quarter was scoreless for close to eight minutes until Thelen scored at the 7:17 mark to put the Mustangs up 5-2. The Battling Bishops scored the next two goals to close within 5-4, before Young's goal at the 5:44 mark made it 6-4. OWU again halved the lead, before a pair of Karsian goals 29 seconds apart, the second at 2:41, made it 8-5. Stevenson took a 9-7 lead into halftime. Stevenson needed just 46 seconds to get on the board as D'Onofrio scored on an assist by Christensen to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead. Ohio Wesleyan tied the game at the 12:58 mark, but a Thelen man-up goal at 12:13 and a D'Onofrio tally at 11:47 put the Mustangs up 3-1. Each team scored one more time in the frame, with D'Onofrio's third goal of the quarter making it 4-2 with 2:44 left on the clock. Senior goalie Ross Dinan made 14 saves for Stevenson, while Sichenzia also made 14 stops as the Mustangs outshot Ohio Wesleyan 59-41. The hosts held a 40-30 advantage in ground ball pickups, while also winning 18-of-31 faceoffs, including 9-of-14 in the second half. Freshman Justin Burnette was 11-16 at the X, while junior Dan Halla won five draws. Burnette also picked up four ground balls.
