PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) broke the Brown program record for goals in a single game with a career-high nine to help the women's lacrosse team defeat Fresno State, 19-13, on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Mosenthal's nine goals break the school record of eight, which she tied Anne Marie Van Hengel '84 earlier in the season against Quinnipiac on Feb. 16. The nine tallies also tie six other players for the Ivy League record. "It was a great team effort across the board," said head coach Keely McDonald. "I am really proud of our staff and team for all of the preparation for this game. Four games in eight days is tough. I like how focused we were today. I am very excited for the week of practice." In addition to Mosenthal's strong performance, junior Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) (3G, 3A), junior KC Williams (Duxbury, Mass.) (3G) and senior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (3G) registered hat tricks. Sophomore Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) also chipped in three assists to increase her team-leading total to 22. After setting a team season high in goals yesterday (Mar. 30) with 17 in a 17-2 win over Sacred Heart, the Bears came back with a season-best 19 goals to defeat the Bulldogs. Brown (6-5) jumped out to a 12-5 lead by the half and never looked back. Mosenthal scored Brown's first two goals of the game at 27:37 and 23:24 for a score of 2-2 before the Bears pulled away with four more scores for a 6-2 lead, which included two from DeGennaro (19:35, 17:10). After Fresno State (7-4) brought the score to 7-4, Brown took a commanding lead of 11-4 with three of the four scores coming from Mosenthal. Ryleigh Bone added a score for the Bulldogs at 4:07 before Mosenthal closed the half with her seventh goal at 2:54. Brown outshot Fresno State 24-10 and had an impressive 13-5 advantage in draw controls. DeGennaro opened the second half's scoring at 28:51 before the Bulldogs countered with two straight to bring the score to 13-7. Both teams traded goals for a 15-9 score when Brown put together a 3-0 run on goals from Mosenthal (15:39), her record breaking score, Verni (13:30) and freshman Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.) (12:16). After a goal from each team at 8:01 and 4:56, Fresno State strung together three-straight to close the game for the final of 19-13. The Bulldogs held the shot advantage for the second at 21-12 while draws were even at 8-8. Freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) finished the day with 11 saves, her seventh game with double-digit saves, while sophomore Cait Barrett (East Windsor, N.J.) appeared in 1:18 minutes while not recording a save. At the other end, Laurel Maunder received the loss in 27:06 minutes of action while recording two saves and Courtney Walburger added four saves in 32:54 minutes to close the contest. With today's scores, Mosenthal eclipsed the 100 goal mark for her career and now has 101 in just 25 games played, good for seventh all-time in the Brown record book for a career. Her 46 goals this season are also already tied for fourth all-time with Kerri Whitaker '96 for a single season effort. The Bears will next play in their third-straight home game and next host No. 6 Penn in an Ivy League match-up on Saturday, April 6 at 12:00 p.m. Video of all Brown women's lacrosse home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Tickets for all Brown women's lacrosse games can be purchased online, calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walking up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
