PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a tightly contested Ivy League game, No. 9 Penn came away as the victor, scoring the game winner with 1:57 remaining to defeat the Brown women's lacrosse team, 9-8, on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Penn moves to 9-2 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in league play while Brown now stands at 6-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference action. "I am so proud of our team effort today," said head coach Keely McDonald. "We left everything on the field. It will be a great game to learn from as a staff and team." Junior KC Williams (Duxbury, Mass.) led the Bears in scoring, recording her second-straight hat trick of the season, while sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) and freshman Alaina Parisella (Chatham, N.J.) each added two goals. Brown held an 8-6 lead with 16:31 remaining in the second on a Mosenthal goal. Penn fought back to knot the contest at eight with an extra attacker score from Erin Barry at 13:22 and a tally from Zoe Belodeau at 11:18. Both teams were held scoreless with solid defensive play until 1:57 when Gabby Rosenweig recorded what proved to be the game winner. The Bears won the ensuing draw control and had two free-position shots that were saved by Makail Cheeseman at 0:54 and 0:41 and then Penn ran out the clock with possession to hold on for the victory. The Bears controlled things early, building a 3-0 lead with two Williams' goals (28:57, 24:53) split up by a Mosenthal tally (27:16). Penn got on the board at 22:37 with an extra attacker goal by Belodeau at 22:37. The Quakers then added three more for their first lead of the game at 15:35 (Rosenzweig). Parisella netted the final goal of the half at 10:47 as the teams entered the break tied, 4-4. Shots were even for the frame at 11-11 while Penn had a 5-4 edge in draw controls. Williams completed her hat trick at 26:18 to open the scoring in the second and give the Bears a 5-4 advantage. Erin Barry capitalized on an extra attacker situation to tie the game and Taylyn Stadler provided to go-ahead tally (25:04). Brown then went on a three-goal run with a scores from junior Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) (20:54), Parisella (19:08) and Mosenthal (16:31) to take a 8-6 lead. Another extra attacker goal aided Penn as Barry scored her second of the afternoon at 13:22. From there, Belodeau tied the contest 8-8 at 11:18 and Rosenzweig scored the game winner a little over nine minutes later (1:57). Penn held a 10-8 advantage in shots for the second and a 21-19 edge overall. Draws were even at 5-5 for the period. Defensively, freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) made six saves overall while Cheeseman had five stops in the opposing net. Junior Emily Fryer (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), senior Olivia Lee (Bethesda, Md.) and senior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) all registered two caused turnovers apiece. Senior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) recorded five draw controls while Williams contributed three. The Bears next close out their road slate and travel to Cornell on Saturday, April 13 for a 1:00 p.m. game.
