PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team concluded the 2019 season with a 13-8 win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears end the year with an 8-7 record and a 4-3 Ivy League mark while the Lions fall to 4-11 overall and 1-6 in conference play. The four league wins are the most for Brown since the 1999 campaign. Following the contest, the Bears honored student manager Sophie MacFarlane, student coach Caitlyn O'Berry, Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.), Hafsa Moinuddin (Chesire, Conn.), Olivia Lee (Bethesda, Md.), Grace Plassche (Clinton, N.J.) and Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) as part of the Class of 2019. "It was a great way to end the season," said head coach Keely McDonald. "I am really proud of our team and the results we had this season. The senior class led us all year and today was no different." Junior Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) led Brown in scoring, tying her career high of five goals. It is the second-straight game in which she has scored five goals, having also recorded five against Harvard last Saturday (Apr. 20). Junior KC Williams (Duxbury, Mass.) (3G, 1A) and sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) (2G) also had strong outings offensively. Defensively, sophomore Mason Warble (Bronxville, N.Y.) and freshman Erin Schafer (Pleasanton, Calif.) paced the squad with four caused turnovers each while Warble also had a team and career-high seven ground balls. Senior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) changed the game by collecting six draw controls. Brown scored its first goal just 10 seconds into the contest with Williams registering the tally. DeGennaro then added back-to-back goals at 29:18 and 28:25 for a 3-0 lead in less than three minutes. There would be some time before the next goal with freshman Alaina Parisella (Chatham, N.J.) netting the score at 12:40 for a 4-0 advantage. Columbia got on the board at 9:53 from Chelsea Witteck before the Bears went on a three-goal run with Williams getting the sequence started with her second of the afternoon at 8:17. Witteck then wrapped up the scoring in the first at 2:45 on a free-position shot for the halftime score of 7-2. Brown outshot Columbia 19-11 the first and had a commanding 8-2 lead in draw controls. Zaffino increased the Bears' lead to six (8-2) at 28:03 to get things going in the second. Witteck then added her third-straight score for the Lions at 26:38. Brown would outscore Columbia 5-1 over the next 15 minutes with DeGennaro tallying three goals in that span for a 13-4 lead to put the game out of reach. The Lions would make a run at the end of the contest with four-straight goals but time would expire before the visitors got any closer. The second ended with a 13-12 shot advantage in favor of the Bears while Columbia came back to hold a 7-6 edge in draw controls. Freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) picked up the win in net and had five saves while Abby Roberts received the loss for the Lions with four stops in the first half. Ryan Schlageter played in the second and turned away three shots. With her two goals today, Mosenthal ranks third all-time at Brown for goals in a season with 51, behind her rookie total of 55, while her 59 points are sixth best. She now has 123 career points (106G, 17A) which is already 10th best in just two season at College Hill. Also in the Brown record book, Warble finished the season tied with Amanda Hatton '99 for fourth with 32 caused turnovers. Zaffino ends her career fourth in draw controls with 116 in just two seasons played.
