James Madison celebrated Senior Day in style, closing the regular season with an important 15-9 Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse victory against Elon Sunday afternoon at Sentara Park. The 25th-ranked Dukes improved to 9-4 on the year and 3-1 in CAA play, while the Phoenix dropped to 8-2 and 2-1. The win avenged an early-season loss at Elon back on March 7. Isabella Peterson torched the Elon defense, registering a career-high six goals with five draw controls. Lizzy Fox tied her career best with three goals and caused three turnovers. Kacey Knobloch accrued four points off two goals and two assists, and Katelyn Morgan contributed a goal and two helpers. As a team, JMU caused 14 of Elon's 16 turnovers, led by Emma Johnson's four. She tied Haley Warden's all-time JMU record, set in 2018, with 119 career caused turnovers. Mairead Durkin also tallied three caused turnovers and Charlotte Haggerty collected three ground balls. JMU did a much better job in the circle in game two against the Phoenix, holding a 15-11 lead. Rachel Matey led all players with seven draws, one shy of her career high. Elon led 3-1 early before the Dukes put together a six-goal rally in less than a 13-minute span. The Dukes connected on four assisted goals and two free-position tallies to mount a 7-3 lead. The Phoenix drew to within 8-6 early in the second half, but three straight goals from the Dukes pushed the lead back to 11-6 with 15:59 to play. Leading 12-9 with inside 10 minutes to go, JMU closed the game with three in a row over the final 7:48 to secure the victory in its regular-season finale. The Phoenix was paced by Sara Bouwman, who had three goals and an assist, and another three goals from Margaret Stephan. SENDING OFF THE SENIORS RIGHT JMU honored its five seniors prior to the start of the game – Emma Johnson, Charlotte Haggerty, Elizabeth Murphy, Daria Lucchesi and Sarah Reilly. All five started, as it was the first of Reilly's career. JMU's three attacking seniors each recorded points while Johnson tied JMU's all-time caused turnovers record. It was the 66th win for Johnson, who has won more games than any other JMU player. The other four seniors won for the 52nd time, which ranks fifth among JMU's all-time classes. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE JMU out-shot Elon 28-20 with a 25-13 advantage in shots on goal. JMU held a 15-11 lead in the circle, which included winning eight of 12 draws in the first half. The Dukes also had leads in both caused turnovers (14-6) and ground balls (13-11). The Dukes cashed in on 4 of 7 free-position opportunities, while Elon was 1 of 2. Elon had 16 turnovers, as opposed to JMU's 13. JMU improved to 8-1 all-time against Elon and 5-0 at home in the series. Peterson has recorded at least three goals in three straight games and Sunday marked her sixth hat trick of the year. JMU has now recorded 26 straight home wins against CAA opponents. QUOTING COACH SHELLEY KLAES "This team has a lot of momentum, they're really focused and really hungry. I thought we played two great halves today, a full 60 minutes, against a really hard-nosed, tough Elon program. Really proud of Isabella Peterson's performance on the draw and attacking end, and I thought it was great day for the Dukes to celebrate our seniors who have given us so much, including a national championship." UP NEXT JMU has concluded the regular season and will await the CAA committee to determine its seeding for the 2021 CAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, which the Dukes will host next month.
