Springfield, Mass. - February 25, 2017 - Using a late four-goal run in the fourth quarter, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team came from behind to defeat Nazareth College in its 2017 season opener, 11-10, at Stagg Field on Saturday afternoon. Coming into the season, both sides were receiving votes in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) National Rankings, as the Pride improve to 1-0 while the Golden Flyers are now 0-1. Nazareth held a 40-36 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play, while also winning the ground ball battle, 30-19. Leading the Pride was the duo of senior midfielder Brendan Dooley (Setauket, N.Y.) and junior goalkeeper Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.), as Dooley posted two goals and an assist while Reynolds was solid in between the pipes, registering 14 saves on the afternoon. Junior midfielder Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine) also had three points, consisting of a goal and two helpers, while senior Tim Cozens (Ridgefield, Conn.) and sophomore Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) each had three ground balls. For Nazareth, junior midfielder Jacob Gray (Homer, N.Y.) posted three goals and one assist, while Hunter Burdick (Hopkinton, Mass.) posted two goals and added two assists for four points on the afternoon. Junior Seth DeLisle (Fulton, N.Y.) was dominant at the face-off "x", as he won 19-of-24 draws and picked up 12 ground balls on the afternoon. It was a low scoring first quarter for both sides, as Gray put the Golden Flyers up 1-0 just 5:02 into the contest, before Cozens found the back of the net for the first time this season with 3:29 left to make it 1-1 at the end of the first. Springfield College then started the second frame with a three-goal run, including two goals from Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.) and one from Preston to give the Pride a 4-1 advantage with 10:54 left in the half. From there, Nazareth would score the next five goals, including two goals from Gray and a hidden-ball-trick goal from Burdick to give the Golden Flyers a 6-4 lead at the halftime break. Nazareth would push its lead to three just 4:19 into the second half on a goal from Burdick, before Vail found the back of the net on a pretty feed from Dooley to cut the Pride's deficit back to a pair. With 3:03 left in the quarter, Anthony Basile (Cortland, N.Y.) registered a man-up goal to make it 8-5, Nazareth heading into the fourth. Springfield College made it a one-goal game just 4:55 into the fourth on goals from Dooley and Ray McCarthy (Somers, Conn.), but the Golden Flyers would counter with Basile's second of the game to make it 9-7 with 8:33 on the clock. With 7:57 to play, Dooley got things started with a rip in transition to make it 9-8, sparking a four-goal spurt over the next 4:44 to give the Pride an 11-9 advantage with 3:13 to play. Senior midfielder Ty Daugstrup (Rocky River, Ohio) netted a pair of goals during the run, while Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.) score his first of the season. Gray would pull the Golden Flyers back to within one, but Springfield College would hold on for the season-opening win. Up next, Springfield College will return to Stagg Field on Wednesday, March 8 when it will host Stevens at 4 p.m.
