Catherine Sexton (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and Krissy Schafer (Longmeadow, Mass.) both recorded career highs in points with six and five, respectively, to lead the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team to a 14-2 victory against Sacred Heart University in Saturday afternoon's season opener at Bremner Field. Sexton scored two goals and also had a personal-best four assists while Schafer scored a career-high five goals to account for all of her points. Kate Clancy (Barrington, R.I.) was credited with three saves. SHU counterpart Paige Hammick made 10 of her 13 saves in the first half. Cassie Cesario finished with one goal, three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Averi Farhat scored the Pioneers' other goal. UP NEXT UNH returns to action Feb. 17 (12 p.m.) at Harvard University. The Wildcats' next home game is Feb. 24 (1 p.m.) against Central Connecticut State University. HOW IT HAPPENED New Hampshire built a 4-0 lead 10 minutes into the game. Sexton set up the first two goals of the game by Vogt (at 24:05) and Schafer (22:54). Schafer and Carly Wooters (White Plains, N.Y.) converted free positions into goals at 22:21 and 20:28, respectively. Sacred Heart trimmed the deficit to 4-1 on Farhat's goal at 16:45, but Sexton responded with a goal 80 seconds later to reestablished a four-goal lead. Teagan Northrup (Longmeadow, Mass.) converted a pass from Wooters into a goal and 6-1 lead at 9:28. Schafer's shot left her stick before the clock hit zero and the ball sailed into the net to give the 'Cats a 7-1 lead into halftime. Sexton's centering pass from behind set up the tally. UNH opened the second half on a 6-0 run for a total streak of nine consecutive goals that pushed the advantage to 13-1 with 11:22 remaining in the game. Cesario stopped the run at 4:52, then Vogt capped the scoring with a goal at 3:18. UNH NOTEBOOK Wooters scored twice and matched her career high of two assists for four points. Anna Vogt (Stratham, N.H.) tallied three points on three goals – both career highs. Julia Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) recorded a goal and an assist in her collegiate debut. Rebecca Sennott (Westford, Mass.) corralled a personal-best four draw controls. She was also credited with a ground ball and one caused turnover. Cat Sennott (Westford, Mass.) finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers – both team highs. In addition to Neyland, Tatum Benesh (Horseheads, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut in the starting lineup. Sabrina Grovom (Marcos, Calif.) and Elizabeth Blanding (Pittsford, N.Y.) came off the bench to make their collegiate debuts. INSIDE THE NUMBERS New Hampshire recorded a 35-7 shot advantage. The Wildcats also had the edge in ground balls (17-12) and draw controls (10-7), as well as turnovers (12-22). UNH scored on 3 of 11 free-position shots. SHU was 0-for-1. UNH is 3-0 lifetime against Sacred Heart; the teams had not met since the 2005 season. New Hampshire has a 25-17 record in season openers. The Wildcats are 3-3 in home openers in the six-year tenure of head coach Sarah Albrecht.
