The Brown women's lacrosse team cruised past Sacred Heart, 15-4, on Saturday in its final non-conference game at Campus Field. The Bears improve to 7-4 on the year with the victory while the Pioneers fall to 0-9. Sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) led the Bears in scoring with five goals with sophomore KC Williams (Duxbury, Mass.) (3G) and junior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (3G, 1A) each recording hat tricks. Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) (2G) and junior Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) (3A) also finished with multiple points. The Bears took charge early and quickly built a 3-0 lead with scores from Verni (28:20), Williams (27:33) and DeGennaro (26:36). Mosenthal split up two Sacred Heart goals to bring the score to 4-2 before the Bears went on another three-goal spurt with DeGennaro (16:46) and Mosenthal (15:52) registering their second while senior Emma Dahle (Wynnewood, Pa.) notched a goal for a 7-2 Brown lead. The Pioneers closed the second half with a goal from Cassie Cesario at 5:42 to bring the contest to 7-3. Brown held a commanding 10-1 lead in draw controls and also outshot Sacred Heart 19-12 in the first. The Bears scored three straight for the third time on the day to open the second half. DeGennaro put in the first two in less than a minute (27:19, 26:59) and Verni scored her second at 26:39. Sacred Heart scored its first of the period at 25:10 (Hanna Wise) before the Bears closed out the afternoon with five straight. Williams notched two in a row (24:46, 23:25) and was followed by Verni (14:58) and freshman Mason Warble (Bronxville, N.Y.) (11:50). From there, Brown moved the ball around and kept the Pionners off the board with senior Mikaela Karlsson (Framingham, Mass.) making two saves. Sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) started in net for the Bears and concluded the day with seven saves in a little over a half of play. Karlsson generated four saves in relief while freshman Cait Barrett (East Windsor, N.J.) made her first collegiate appearance towards the end of the contest. Paige Hammick reached 12 saves for SHU. Brown again led in shots for the second frame at 16-9 and had a 7-3 advantage in draw controls. Overall, the Bears held a 35-21 shot lead and a 17-4 gain in draw controls, with junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) winning 10, moving her into third place all-time for a season at College Hill. Brown took four free-position shots in each half and converted on three in the first and two in the second while Sacred Heart was 1-for-9 overall with its lone success coming in the second. The Bears next return to Stevenson-Pincince Field to host No. 21 Cornel in a pivotal Ivy League match-up on Saturday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m. on the Ivy League Network and ESPN3.
