Kate Carney and Kylie Nause each scored four goals to lead a University of Cincinnati scoring attack that saw eight different players score as the Bearcats handed visiting Butler a 19-6 defeat Tuesday afternoon at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati. The Bearcats (7-5), winners of four in a row, scored 19 or more goals for the fourth time on the year with Monica Borzillo and Sam Mlkvy each scoring three apiece while Giuliana Durso led the goalies with two saves in the win that sent Butler to a 3-9 record on the year. // QUICK NOTES • Cincinnati, which as now won four in a row, improved to 7-5 overall while Butler fell to 3-9 on the year • The Bearcats are 3-0 all-time against the Bulldogs and 2-0 when the two teams meet in the Queen City • In the series, the Bearcats have outscored the Bulldogs, 54-17, including 40-9 in the two games at UC • With seven wins (and five regular season games to go), UC is already tied for second on the single-season victories list with the 2009 and 2013 squads with only last year's 8-9 team having more victories in a season • Sticking with history, two of Nause's goals are now part of the record books at UC as her second of the day (13:20 in the first) is the 400th goal UC has scored at Gettler Stadium while her final goal of the game (0:37 in the second) stands as the 1,800th all-time goal • During the game, the American Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners from last week's action with Nause (freshman of the week), Durso (defensive player of the week) and Borzillo (Honor Roll) each being recognized • Nause finished the game with four goals for her seventh hat trick in a row and tied for the team lead in goals with Carney • Carney recorded her first career hat trick as she netted four goals, two more than her previous single-game high that came earlier this year against Marquette • Borzillo finished with seven points on three goals and four assists, keeping alive her streaks of games in a row with at least one assist (13) and at least one point (29) • Durso was not tested often in the game as she allowed two goal and saved two shots in the opening 30 minutes of play • Alyssa Adams scored twice on free-position shots, bringing her season total to 10, which is the fifth-best in a single season at UC • Sam Mlkvy posted six draw controls to bring her season total to 60, the third-most in UC history and making her the only player to record 60 or more draws in a season twice in a career • As a team, the Bearcats placed several totals on the all-time Top 10 ledgers, including #10 in points in a game (27), #8 in goals scored (19), #3 in free-position goals scored (6) and #6 in caused turnovers (15) // HOW IT HAPPENED The Bearcats jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of play as Adams, Nause and Borzillo each tallied one goal. The Bulldogs, however, hung around and scored back-to-back goals to close the gap to one (3-2) with 16:25 remaining in the opening stanza. From there, however, UC took control and did not relinquish as the Bearcats scored the next 13 goals in a row, including the final 11 of the first half, to take a 14-2 lead at the break and turn that into a 16-2 advantage with 27:05 remaining in the contest. BU put three on the board after that to halt the UC run, but Mlkvy netted her third of the day before Carney snagged her fourth to put the Bearcats ahead, 18-5, with under seven to play. Both teams traded goals to end the contest with Nause scoring the final goal, which also stands as the 1,800th scored in program history. // BREAKING NEWS! During the game, the American Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners with three Bearcats earning recognition. Durso was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Week, Nause was named the AAC Freshman of the Week for the third week in a row and Borzillo was added to the Honor Roll. Check back to GoBearcats.com Wednesday for a full release on the trio. // A CARNEY-MORE Carney feasted in front of the cage today as she scored four goals to record her first career hat trick and double her highest goal scoring output in a game as her previous best was two against Marquette earlier this year. Carney finished the day with her four goals coming on four shots, including 1-of-1 in free-position attempts, while adding five ground balls and one caused turnover. // NAUSE STAYS HOT To say Nause has been on a tear lately could be an understatement. The freshman has scored 24 goals in the last seven games, recording seven-consecutive hat tricks, and leads all AAC rookies in goals scored with 26 on the year. Today, she added a perfect 2-of-2 free-position shooting while scoring on four of her five shots on frame. // HISTORI-GOAL Two of Nause's goals will now hold places in the record books as well. Her second goal of the day was the 400th goal scored by a UC player in a home game at Gettler Stadium. Later, she ended the scoring with her final goal of the day - the 19th of the game - registering as the 1,800th in program history (all locations). UC is now 19 goals away from reaching 1,819 as the University celebrates its bicentennial in 2019. // BORZILLO CLIMBING Borzillo put in another big day at the office, scoring three goals and helping on four others for seven points. For the season, she now has 39 goals and 31 assists for 70 points, the second-highest total in a season at UC behind only her own 73 points from 2017. Her 31 assists are also second and just off her own mark of 34 from 2017. // GETTING WINS Durso played the opening 30 minutes of the game and didn't face too many shots as she saved two and allowed two goals to pick up her seventh win of the season. Durso is now three wins away from tying the career wins list for a goalie at UC. // DRAWN OUT Mlkvy's day was another solid one for the books as she collected a team-best six draw controls while adding three goals and one assist for four points. With those draws, she now has 60 for the year, making her the first player in UC history to record 60+ twice in a career. // WINS Sitting at 7-5, the Bearcats already have recorded their second-most wins in a season, tying the 2009 and 2013 squads for second with the 2018 squad's 8-9 mark setting the standard. UC has five more regular season games slated this year to try and break the record for the second year in a row. // NEXT UP Cincinnati returns to action Saturday as the Bearcats will venture to Greenville, N.C., for their first road game in American Athletic Conference play as they will face the Pirates of ECU at noon Saturday. The game will be streamed live on the American Digital Network.
