HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team fell to High Point 16-9 on Wednesday afternoon in High Point, N.C. The Chanticleers fall to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the Southern Conference while the Panthers improved to 2-6 on the season. Coastal was led by a quartette of Chants with three points apiece. Lauren Cremen tallied the hat trick with three goals while the CCU's leading scorer Samantha Courtemanche and fellow Chant Megan Bozzi had two goals and one assist each. Redshirt freshman Kayla Downey had three assists. Defensively, CCU goalkeeper Claire Martell was bombarded with 33 shots and stopping 10 while giving up the 16 goals. Sophomore Bethany Bruck and Anya McSorley led the team in caused turnovers with three and two, respectively. HPU was led by Ashley Britton and Abby Hormes with five goals apiece with Britton adding two assists. The Panthers picked up 10 saves between the two goalkeepers that were used while a trio caused three turnovers, Megan Nerney, Katie Hormes, and Jenna Kraft. Kraft and Katie Hormes had six and four groundballs, respectively. High Point opened the contest with the first goal with just 24 seconds expiring off the game clock as Britton found the back of the net. Britton followed up with two more goals in just over one minute after an Abby Hormes goal for the 4-0 advantage. The Chanticleers' Abbey Buchanan pulled CCU within three at 4-1 with 16:16 remaining in the first half. The two squads would nearly match each other's output for the remainder of the first half as the Panthers took an 8-4 lead into the intermission. HPU would answer each score by Coastal to keep the momentum on its side. Bozzi found the back of the net for her first of the match with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first-half off the assist from Downey. High Point would answer with two goals for a 7-2 advantage before the Chanticleers would pull within three as true freshman Monica Manley scored off the second Downey assist and then Manley would find Courtemanche to make it 7-4. Abby Hormes closed the first-half scoring with 3:06 remaining until the break. The Chanticleers would get as close as three at 8-5 as Cremen found the back of the net with 36 seconds expiring from the second half game clock off the Courtemanche dish. The Panthers would fire three-straight scores to push the lead to 11-5 before Courtemanche closed the gap to 11-6 with 25:44 remaining to play. The final 25 minutes had High Point outscoring the Chants 5-3 for the final 16-9 margin. Cremen closed the match with the final two goals. The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team will travel to Newark, Del. to battle the Delaware Blue Hens on Sunday, March 21. The opening draw is scheduled for noon ET.
