Trailing Columbia by five with less than 15 minutes to play, the Yale women's lacrosse staged a furious comeback Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. Three goals by junior midfielder Addie Zinsner fueled a 5-0 run that drew the Bulldogs into a 10-10 tie with 8:06 to play. But after trailing all game long, Yale never wound up taking the lead. The Lions scored twice in the final 4:09 to come away with a 12-10 win. In addition to hat tricks from Zinsner and first-year midfielder Olivia Markert, Yale's day was highlighted by 10 draw controls for junior attacker Izzy Nixon -- giving her an Ivy League record 112 for the season. As the sun broke through the clouds near game time Saturday, the stands started to fill in with some large groups. Members of the Yale women's basketball team were on hand, as the Bulldogs just added two basketball players to the roster -- sophomore midfielders Bronwyn Davies and Megan Gorman -- with that team's season having ended Mar. 29 with a win in the WBI Championship game. Additionally, a dozen or so players from Harlem Lacrosse -- a charity designed to help at-risk youth with academics while also teaching them lacrosse -- joined the Bulldogs on the field for the National Anthem and also played a game at halftime. Yale (7-5, 2-2 Ivy League) fell behind 8-2 in the first half, outshot 21-5 by the Lions. Markert and sophomore midfielder Barrett Carlson scored Yale's goals. Markert sparked Yale's second-half comeback with a pair of goals in the first 11:15 of the second half. The second of those pulled the Bulldogs within 9-4, and senior midfielder Emily Granger followed with a goal 33 seconds later to get Yale within four. By that point Columbia had lost attacker Lindsey Ewertsen (two goals, one assist), who got her second yellow card of the game at 20:21. After Columbia midfielder Fallon Quinn scored at 18:33, Zinsner started Yale's 5-0 run by bouncing in a free position goal at 14:46. Nixon got the draw control after that one, then got the draw control after Zinsner scored off a Carlson assist at 13:35. That was Nixon's 109th draw of the year, breaking the record set by Dartmouth's Kathryn Giroux last season. Granger scored on a free position shortly after that, and so did senior midfielder Madeleine Gramigna. The Yale captain's goal prompted a Columbia timeout with 10:26 to play. Zinsner scored again off a Carlson feed to tie the score 10-10 at 8:06, and the Bulldogs had multiple chances to take the lead on the next possession. But Columbia goalie Kelsey Gedin made a pair of saves, and the Lions eventually got possession. They had several chances after a Yale yellow card with 5:29 left. Senior goalkeeper Sydney Marks made a big save on midfielder Devon Stuzin to keep Columbia at bay with 4:30 to play, but a free position goal by attacker Orna Madigan at 4:09 proved to be the difference-maker. The Lions scored again with 1:49 left, and after a Gedin save on a Yale free position with a minute left Columbia ran out the clock. The result, combined with No. 23 Cornell's loss at Brown, creates a three-way tie for fourth in the Ivy League standings, as the Bulldogs, Lions and Big Red are all 2-2. Yale plays at No. 20 Princeton next Saturday.
