HARRISONBURG, Va. – Sixth-ranked James Madison exploded for 15 straight goals, holding Canisius without a score for nearly 37 minutes en route to a 21-4 victory on a rainy Friday night at Sentara Park. The Dukes improve to 4-1 after turning in a tie for the ninth-most goals in school history. The loss dropped the Golden Griffins to 0-4 on the year. "Considering the weather conditions and the amount of subbing we did today, I was really impressed with our level of play tonight," Head Coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe said. "We played a total polished game from start to finish. Our attack was smooth today with an incredible shooting percentage, and our defense cleaned up everything." JMU had eight players record at least two goals, led by junior midfielder Halle Duenkel, who tied her career high with three first-half goals. Freshman midfielder Lizzy Fox paced all players with four points off two goals and two assists, all of which were career highs. Junior attacker Logan Brennan and junior midfielder Kelsey Reed each notched two goals and an assist, and senior attacker Hanna Haven also had three points off a goal and two assists. The Dukes controlled the pace of the game due in large to an 18-9 draw controls lead, led by seven from junior attacker Maddie McDaniel. Senior defender Caroline Sdanowich had four draws and freshman midfielder Mairead Durkin added three in her first collegiate game. Defensively, junior Emma Johnson and senior Lauren DuVall each caused two turnovers. JMU made a habit of scoring off the draw, with three instances of scoring back-to-back goals within 15 seconds from the previous score. The Dukes extended the lead to double digits, at 11-1, just over 21 minutes into the game and Canisius never drew closer the rest of the way. "Our ability to score in transition today was a big improvement and something we've worked hard on," Klaes-Bawcombe said. "Anytime you can have transition goals, it gives you quick momentum. We challenged the team because we wanted to be able to create scoring runs. I was impressed with our ability to go to goal." INSIDE THE BOX SCORE JMU led every statistical category, scoring nine more goals than Canisius had total shots. The Dukes held advantages in shots (30-12), shots on goal (26-10), draw controls (18-9), caused turnovers (8-7), ground balls (18-9), turnovers (11-13) and saves (6-5). JMU went a perfect 3-for-3 on free-position shots while holding Canisius to a 1-for-3 mark. It was the first free-position goal for all three Dukes who converted from the 8-meter line (Halle Duenkel, Shannon Quinlan and Kelsey Reed). Redshirt sophomore Molly Dougherty made five saves while conceding just one goal in her 30 minutes of action. She now ranks tied for 16th with 150 career saves. A total of 12 JMU players scored a goal and 14 tallied at least one point on the evening. Canisius was led by Jourdan Roemer, who had two goals and an assist, and Miranda Malvaso tacked on a score and two helpers. SURPASSING 20 ON THE SCOREBOARD JMU recorded at least 20 goals in a game for the sixth straight season, as its 21 goals ranked tied for ninth in school history. Friday's performance marked the program's 25th game ever going over 20 goals. It was the 19th game against a Division I opponent that the Dukes reached the scoring milestone.
