NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's lacrosse program has a rich tradition that dates back nearly 70 years. Championships, NCAA Tournaments are all a part of that tradition. When something is accomplished for the first time in 11 years in a program with such a rich tradition, it means a little something extra. That's exactly what happened on a cold Tuesday afternoon at Delaware Stadium when the Blue Hens blew by the Hawks of Saint Joseph's, 14-6. It's the first 4-0 start since 2008 for Delaware. "I'm proud of the guys effort today against a tough opponent. I thought we executed the game plan fairly well on both sides of the field and we're certainly happy with the result," head coach Ben DeLuca said. "It's great to get off to this start, but everyone in that locker room knows we have a long way to go. We've got a lot of work ahead of us and we have to keep working and keep getting better each and every day." Tye Kurtz led a powerful offensive attack with a program record for points in a single game by a freshman, finishing with five goals and three assists on the day. Junior Charlie Kitchen tied a career-high with six points in the contest with four goals and two assists, while senior co-captain Joe Eisele had a career-high five points on three goals and two assists. Defensively, sophomore Zach Strassner was outstanding with three caused turnovers and seven groundballs, both career-highs. Junior Matt DeLuca had double-digit saves yet again with 12 on the afternoon and the Blue Hens limited their third straight opponent to six or fewer goals. Delaware currently leads the country allowing just 5.50 goals per game. "I really owe this all to my teammates and coaches for putting in me in positions to have success," Kurtz said. "With a quick turnaround from Saturday, we had to install our game plan quicker than usual and I thought we did a good job of working together and fighting for each other this afternoon." For the first 10 minutes, the teams traded goals with Kurtz and Eisele both scoring for the Blue Hens. Kurtz took a pass from Bryce Reid and fired home his second goal of the day, which ignited a spurt of five unanswered by Delaware, two of which came from Eisele as the Blue Hens opened up a 7-2 advantage. Momentum stayed with the Blue Hens and Kurtz in the third quarter with the freshman scoring three of Delaware's five goals in the third to push the lead to 12-3. Kitchen found the back of the net two more times in the final quarter to round out the scoring and secure the dominating 14-6 victory by the Blue Hens. Up Next Delaware travels to 10th-ranked Villanova on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
