DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2019) – Powered by 11 different Mavericks scoring, the No. 15 Mercy College men's lacrosse team opened up its 2019 season with a convincing, 22-4, victory over American International College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Mavericks (1-0) improve to 8-2 all-time in season openers, while the Yellow Jackets (0-1) open their season with a loss. The 22 goals scored ties the program record for goals in a game, matching the 22 goals scored against Franklin Pierce on March 16, 2011. The 18-goal margin of victory also ties the school record previously set against Franklin Pierce in 2011. Sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) led the way with a career-high eight points on four goals and four assists. Freshman JoJo Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) started his Mercy career with four goals and senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) finished with three goals and an assist. Senior Matthew DeFeo (Upper Brookville, N.Y./St. Dominic's) and junior Anthony DeVito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) posted two goals and two assists each and senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) and junior Ricky Marchelos (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Herricks) had a goal and two assists. Junior Robert LoRicco (Guilford, Conn./University at Albany) posted two goals and sophomore Sean Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) had a goal and an assist. Junior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) dished out two assists and freshmen Brody Guido (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) also scored. Guido added five ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore Christian Hernandez (Farmingdale, N.Y./Dominican College) netted an assist. Sophomore Vincent Campbell (Clark, N.J./AL Johnson) and LoRicco led the Mavericks with three caused turnovers each and junior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) had a team-high six ground balls while going 7-of-10 on faceoffs. Sophomore John Collins (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) went 9-of-12 on faceoffs and had four ground balls. Senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made four saves in the first half to earn the win. Freshmen Thomas Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) and junior Matthew Prasenski (Rockaway Park, N.Y./Xaverian) split the time in goal in the second half and allowed just one goal. American International was led by Avery Foye and Rusty Stone who both had two goals. Stephen Stratton made 14 saves to take the loss. Mercy took control from the start with Chillianis scoring under a minute into the contest to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. That goal started a 6-0 run to start the game with Scorcia scoring twice and Janavey, Chillianis and DeVito scoring as well to put Mercy up 6-0 with 6:22 left in the first quarter. Stone made it 6-1 with a tally at the 3:02 mark before MacSpadyen ended the period with a goal from McPartland that put Mercy ahead 7-1 after the first quarter. The Mavericks started the second quarter with three straight goals to take a 10-1 lead. Chillianis, Jack Gibbons and Scorcia all found the back of the net before Stone added his second goal of the game to make it 10-2 with 11:38 remaining in the frame. Scorcia netted his final goal of the game at the 10:56 mark to put Mercy up 11-2 before an AIC goal just over a minute later brought the score to 11-3. Janavey answered with three straight goals to up the Mavericks lead to 14-3 and LoRicco's first goal as a Maverick at the 1:22 mark sent Mercy into halftime up, 15-3. Guido, Marchelos and DeFeo got in the scoring column to begin the third quarter, making it 18-3 with 8:33 left in the period. DeVito and LoRicco posted their second goals of the day to bring the score to 20-3 with 3:19 left in the third quarter. Foye closed out the scoring for AIC with his second of the day to make it 20-4 after three quarters. Stockton and DeFeo both scored off assists from Marchelos in the fourth quarter to give Mercy a 22-4 lead and the Mavericks held the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the final quarter to secure the win. Mercy held a 44-16 edge in shots, a 58-30 advantage in ground balls and won 18-of-30 faceoffs. Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, February 17th when they host No. 2 Le Moyne at 12 p.m.
