Marist scored five-straight goals in the span of 14:08 between the third and fourth quarters to turn a 6-5 Canisius lead into a 10-6 advantage, as the visiting Red Foxes earned a 10-8 victory over the Golden Griffins in MAAC men's lacrosse league action Friday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. With the win, Marist (8-6, 6-1 MAAC) secured the league's regular-season title and the top seed in next weekend's MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship, which will be held in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., while the Blue and Gold fell to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in league play with the loss. Canisius' postseason hopes ride on the results of Quinnipiac or Siena's final regular-season game Saturday, needing either team to lose their final game in order to earn a spot in next week's league tournament. GAME RECAP The Griffs, who trailed 5-4 at intermission, scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 6-5 lead with 10:55 left in third frame. Freshman Jacob Buck tied the game at 5-5 with the second of his four goals on the day 3:14 into the second half, and moments later, Buck assisted on senior Mario Caito's second goal of the contest at the 10:55 mark of the third to put Canisius in front. That lead was the Griffs' first since the home team led the contest 4-3 midway through the second quarter, and would end up being the Blue and Gold's final advantage on the scoreboard in the game. Marist's Joe Tierney scored back-to-back goals for the Red Foxes to give the visiting unit a 7-6 lead with 5:10 left in the third. James Lyons made the score a two-goal edge in favor of Marist before Avery Nesmith stretched the Marist lead to 9-6 with a man-up goal at the 2:11 mark of the third quarter off an assist from Tierney. Marist's Jamison Embury pushed the score 10-6 with 11:02 left on the clock with his second goal of the contest, capping the Red Foxes' five-goal outburst. Buck scored the next two goals for the Griffs to make the score 10-8, which was as close as the home team would get in the contest. Buck's third goal came off an assist from senior Layne Collins with 8:16 left to play, and the Rochester, N.Y., native fourth goal of the contest trimmed Marist's cushion to two at 10-8. On the ensuing face-off, Marist's Peyton Smith secured the ball for Marist, which was able to wind the clock down to 2:31 before a turnover, setting up Canisius' late comeback attempt. But Marist goalkeeper Jake MacGregor was up to the challenge late, as he made a save on a shot by Canisius junior Carter Stefaniak with 1:35 to seal the win. After Marist opened the scoring at the 13:48 mark of the opening frame, the Griffs scored three-straight markers to take a 3-1 lead with 5:29 left in the first quarter. Buck got the scoring started for the Griffs with the first goal at the 11:36 mark of the first quarter, followed by unassisted goals by Stefaniak and Caito. Marist's Jake Weinman ended the Griffs' run with his 26th goal of the season off an assist from Tierny, who finished the day with two goals and two assists in the winning effort. MacGregor made eight stops between the pipes for Marist en route to his eighth victory of the season, while Canisius' Brad Nordstrom was credited with six saves in the loss. Marist out-shot Canisius 31-29 for the contest and the Red Foxes held a 35-25 advantage in ground balls. Marist dominated the face-off X with a 17-4 advantage on the day, with Smith claiming 11-straight face-off victories after intermission. HEAD COACH MARK MIYASHITA'S POSTGAME COMMENTS "In terms of the way we played, it was a huge bounce back as it relates to the attitude and effort of our guys from last week. They sold out as a team. The guys on the bench were pumped up. The guys on the field that were playing were out there diving around trying to make plays. I cannot complain about the effort our team today. Obviously, we fell short, but I'm proud of the way we competed. "In the third quarter, we made a couple of mistakes that allowed them to get some opportunities in transition, which we discussed during the week that we didn't want to do, and they were able to capitalize on that. They got rolling during that stretch and we didn't have an answer for them. At the end of the day, we ran out of time on the clock. Marist did a great job of capitalizing on those opportunities. "We talked about the fact that at this point, we're still alive. Unfortunately, we had a chance to be in the driver's seat the last two weeks and we didn't take advantage of it and cement our spot and now we're left to watching the scoreboard on a couple of other games tomorrow. Hopefully, if we're lucky and fortunate to get a second chance, we talked about the fact that we've got to be prepared and ready to go. If we get the chance to go to the conference tournament, have to be ready to take full advantage of the opportunity.
