The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell to the Marquette Golden Eagles, 16-13, on Saturday (March 16) at the Marquette Dome. U-M (3-3) played short-handed, missing its top four faceoff options as well as All-American midfielder Brent Noseworthy. The Wolverines got on the board first with a marker from senior Decker Curran 56 seconds into the contest, but the Golden Eagles (4-3) rattled off five unanswered goals to lead, 5-1, late in the opening stanza. An extra-man goal from freshman Bryce Clay off a feed from sophomore Alex Buckanavage with 31 seconds left in the first period cut the deficit to 5-2 heading into the second. U-M cut the Marquette advantage to 5-3 early in the second quarter on a score from junior Avery Myers at 11:37, but the Golden Eagles then rattled off four consecutive goals late in the quarter to increase their lead to 9-3. Myers added his second of the contest with one second left in the quarter as MU carried a 9-4 advantage heading into halftime. Coming out of the break, Marquette added two goals in the opening minutes of he third quarter to lead by seven, 11-4, and the two teams traded goals for the majority of the third stanza. Michigan closed the quarter with back-to-back scores with under a minute to go. Curran's second of the contest with 30 seconds to go on an extra-man chance made the score 14-8, and Clay followed with another Wolverine goal 20 seconds later to bring the count to 14-9 heading into the fourth. U-M outscored the Golden Eagles 4-2 in the final quarter. Marquette opened the quarter with a tally before DeCaprio answered at the 12:35 mark to make the score 15-10. Following a mark from Marquette's Ryan Fazio with 5:55 to play, U-M added goals from Brown (5:16), Mack (3:22) and Myers on the extra-man opportunity with seven seconds remaining in the contest to wrap up the scoring. Clay (three goals, one assist), and Buckanavage (two goals, two assists) led the Wolverines in points with four. DeCaprio collected three of U-M's nine faceoff wins, along with a goal, assist, three ground balls and a caused turnover.
