Maritime came in to Saturday's game against 0-2 in conference, MIT came in at 1-0. At the end of 60 minutes of play, the Engineers improved to 7-5 overall, 2-0 in the NEWMAC with a 15-7 victory over the now 4-5, 0-2, Bucs. Sophomore Alex Lucas (Walpole, Mass) scored three goals to lead the Maritime attack. Spencer Jones (Hyannis, Mass) found the back of the net twice for the hosts. Leading scorer, Benjamin Avakian (Bourne, Mass) scored once in the game on five shots. Junior Trey Guerrini (Foxborough, Mass) rounded out the scoring for Maritime. Faceoff man and midfielder, Colby Unterstein (Ellington, Conn) facilitated his teammates twice in the game. Between the pipes, senior captain goalie Michael Dolan (McLean, Va) faced 28 MIT shots, saving 13 and allowing the 15 goals. For MIT, Aidan Westley (Palos Verdes, Calif) scored a game-high five times on seven shots. Freshman Jack Montinaro (Riverside, Conn) added three goals and an assist for the Engineers. Mark Heatzig (Boca Raton, Fla) and Liam Miller (Pasadena, Calif) both scored twice on the night. Heatzig added two assists to his score line. Defensively, four players caused two turn overs each, accounting for eight of the nine total caused turnovers for MIT in the game. Freshman goalie Lukas Drexler-Bruce (Denver, Colo) saw 16 shots on target, saved nine of them and allowed the seven Buccaneer goals. MIT dominated the scoring in the first quarter, scoring two minutes in and again every three minutes, with the exception of their fourth and fifth goals of the quarter which came just over a minute apart, taking a 5-0 lead in to the second quarter. Westley scored three of his five goals in the first 15 minutes. The Engineers scored three more times in the second before the Bucs got on the scoreboard on Lucas' first goal with eight and a half left to play in the half. Down 8-1 at that point, Guerrini scored 40 seconds later to cut the MIT lead to six. Miller scored his first of the game under a minute after Guerrini's goal to retake a seven goal advantage. The teams headed to the half time break with the score 9-2 in favor of MIT. Maritime broke through in the second half, particularly the third quarter, outscoring the Engineers 4-3, with two goals from Lucas and one apiece from Avakian and Jones. The Bucs closed the gap to 10-6 with under five minutes to play in the third quarters but MIT netted two unassisted goals to close out the third to double up the Bucs heading in to the fourth, 12-6. In the final period, the MIT attacks was too much for the Bucs, outscoring their hosts 3-1 to take the eventual final score, 15-7, with 11 minutes to play. Up next for the Bucs is a non-conference road trip to UMass-Dartmouth on Wednesday, April 10th at 7pm.
