COLLEGE PARK, Md. – All it took was one shot in overtime by Nicole Barretta (Exton, Pa.) to send the No. 14 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team past No. 9 James Madison and onto the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The game winner came at the 4:41 mark of overtime after Rayna Sabella (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) found Barretta and the rest is history as the Seawolves took down the 2018 national champion Dukes, 10-9, on Friday night at Capital One Field. QUOTING HEAD COACH Joe Spallina "What an incredible lacrosse game. We tip our caps to James Madison and we have respect for what they did last year. They did something for the mid-majors that set that tone and expectation. For us, this was a great win. I don't think it looked great at the half and then we went down by three at one point but I thought we showed resiliency in a lot of ways. That game was a microcosm of our season where we got off to a tough start but we weathered the storm, weathered the punches and righted the ship and were able to find our way." HIGHLIGHTS Down 6-3 at the half, Stony Brook inched back in the second, going on a three-goal run to take a 9-8 lead with 2:46 left in regulation. James Madison tied things up with 1:28 on the clock to send the game to overtime. After winning the opening draw in overtime and taking a timeout, Sabella found Barretta in the middle of the fan who tucked a shot into the top right corner for the decisive win. Ally Kennedy (North Babylon, N.Y.) led the offensive charge with four goals, four ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls. Kennedy now has 99 points this season from 84 goals and 15 assists. Goals also came from Siobhan Rafferty (Long Beach, N.Y.), Keri McCarthy (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Sabrina Tabasso (Lower Merion, Pa.) and Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md.). Taryn Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) collected four assists. Goalkeeper Anna Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y.) was huge in net, recording 12 saves. NOTES The victory now puts Stony Brook on a 12-game win streak. This marks the 17th game this year that Kennedy has scored at least three goals in. Stony Brook had the slight advantage in shots (26-24), ground balls (18-17) while James Madison dominated in draw controls (15-6). With her 99 points on the season, Kennedy is now eighth in program history in single-season points and also moved up to No. 9 in career ground balls (123). NEXT UP No. 3 Maryland awaits Stony Brook in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Action at Capital One Field is set to get underway this Sunday at noon and will be televised on BTN.
