In a game that Brown never trailed, Bears' sophomore attackman George Grell (Short Hills, NJ) scored on a pass from Carson Song (Charlotte, NC) with 1:40 remaining to break a 14-14 tie and lift Brown to a 16-14 Ivy League win over Harvard in the league opener for both teams. Brown improves to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in the Ivy League, while Harvard falls to 2-4, 0-1 in league play. "This was a great game with a lot of ups and downs," said Brown head coach Mike Daly. "I'm proud of how our team battled to the bitter end. That's what we expect when we play an Ivy game." Brown led for most of the game, holding a 5-1 advantage after one quarter, 7-5 at the half and 13-11 after three quarters. Brown grabbed a 14-13 lead on Ryan Aughavin's (Glen Head, NY) third goal at 8:41 of the fourth quarter, but Harvard's Nigel Andrews quickly tied the game, knotting the score for the sixth time, with a goal at the 7:45 mark. Bears' All-American goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) came up with the biggest save of the game when he stopped Harvard's Kyle Anderson one-on-one with 5:30 left in the game. Grell's game-winning goal, his third of the game, came on a man-up opportunity for the Bears with 1:40 remaining. Bears' junior defenseman Michael Brown (Wilton, CT) scored an empty net goal with eight seconds left on the clock. Freshman Darian Cook (Redding, CT) also scored three goals for the Bears, while adding two assists for five points. Aughavin finished with three goals and an assist, while junior Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) and Jackson Newsome (Arlington, VA) added two goals each. Both goalies were outstanding with Goss registering 14 saves and Crimson goalie Kyle Mullen making 16 stops. Harvard's Anderson led all scorers with five goals, while Andrew added three goals for the Crimson. The game may have been decided in the face-off x, with Brown holding a 23-11 advantage. Jason Simaan (Newport Beach, CA) won 18-of-27 face-offs, while Bears' sophomore Matt McShea (Winnetka, IL) captured 5-of-7 face-offs. The Bears out-shot the Crimson by a 53-43 margin and the ground balls were even at 41-41. Brown will host Holy Cross on short rest, facing the Crusaders on Tuesday, March 19 at Stevenson-Pincince Field, starting at 7:00 pm on ESPN+.
