In a battle of the nations top-10, the No. 6 Tufts University men's lacrosse team dominated No. 2 Amherst College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play at Bello Field on Saturday afternoon. Senior Matt Treiber found the back of the cage five times in the win. The Jumbos improve to 3-0 on the season with a 2-0 record in NESCAC play. The Mammoths fall to 2-1 overall with a 1-1 record in league games. Amherst's Matt Solberg opened the scoring after firing a shot from nearly 15 yards out with 12:39 remaining in the first quarter. Tufts quickly responded after forcing a turnover. Junior Taggart Eymer drove the field following a ground ball from senior Jack Donohue. Eymer earned a clear and drove towards goal. His shot beat Chad Simons and tied the score just 18 seconds later. The Mammoths would get the next goal as Jackson Herrick collected a ground ball following a save by senior Mason Pollack. He fired a shot from about 10 yards out that beat Pollack and gave Amherst a 2-1 lead with the man-up goal. The Jumbos evened score once again on a crank shot by junior Garrett Samuelson. They quickly took the lead on an almost no-look shot by junior Bryce Adam. Adam drove around the cage from "X" and got enough clearance from the defender to rip a falling away shot into the top of the cage. Samuelson gave Tufts a two-goal lead late in the quarter as with a man-up, the Jumbos moved the ball around the attacking zone and found the junior with an open lane to score. Just 16 seconds into the second quarter Adam scored a man-up goal that was nearly identical to Samuelson's man-up goal. Sophomore Cam Kelleher continued the Tufts run with a scoop and score rebound goal, all within the first minute of the second quarter. Sophomore Mac Bredahl gave the Jumbos a commanding five goal lead as he fired a shot that went off the bottom of the crossbar and in which gave the Brown and Blue a 7-2 lead with 12:37 remaining in the half. In the remaining time in the half, 13 goals would be scored by the teams. It started with a pair of goals by Amherst's Jon Coffey and Colin Minicus. That pair of goals was quickly responded to on goals by senior Nick Shanks and Samuelson. Senior Matt Treiber and Bredahl added two more goals before the quick run was ended by a man-up goal by Dylan Peabody. Treiber earned his second of the game and sophomore Trevar Hall scored eight seconds apart and gave the Jumbos a 13-5 lead at the time. However, four more goals came in the final 2:03 of the half. Solberg tallied two within 12 seconds of each other. Shanks regained the momentum for tufts but a goal with three seconds left by Solberg sent the teams to the break with Tufts leading, 14-8. The third quarter opened the same way as the second ended as Samuelson and Shanks found the back of the cage just 12 seconds apart, once again. Peabody responded with a goal of his own before the teams traded two goals each which made the score 18-11. The Jumbos regained possession, momentum, and nearly put the game out of reach with four late third quarter goals by Treiber, sophomore Matt Lane, Treiber again, and Kelleher, which gave Tufts a 22-11 lead headed to the fourth quarter. After Treiber opened the fourth quarter with his fifth goal of the game and a goal by senior Tristan Courtney, Tufts led by a game-high 13. With the lead as large as it was and the time remaining the Jumbos cruised to a 25-15 win in a rematch of last season's NCAA "Elite 8" matchup. Leading the offense was Bredahl who had three goals and four assists for seven points. Treiber had five goals and Samuelson had four goals of his own. Shanks, Kelleher, and Adam added three goals each in a spread Jumbo offense. Junior Kyle Helfrich won 20 of 40 faceoffs he took in the contest. Helfrich led all players with 12 ground balls. Solberg led the Mammoth offense with four goals and an assist for five points. Colin Minicus and Coffey added three goals each. Dylan Finazzo won 17 of 29 faceoffs and collected a team-high eight ground balls. Pollack earned the win after making six saves on 14 shots on goal in one half of work. He improves to 3-0 on the season. Theuer made five saves on 12 shots on goal in relief. Simons falls to 2-1 on the season in just over 27 minutes of work. He made nine saves on 22 shots on goal. Gib Versfeld stopped 17 shots in relief for the Mammoths. The Jumbos wrap up their four-game season opening homestand on Tuesday evening when they host Ithaca College at 7pm. The Mammoths head to Endicott College on Tuesday afternoon for a 4pm start.
