Cannons Beat Rochester, 16-14

The Rochester Rattlers lost to the first place Boston Cannons 16-14 on Saturday night at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, New York. Cannons attacker Max Quinzani and midfielder Paul Rabil combined for seven goals and three assists to power the Boston attack, while MLL veteran attacker Matt Poskay scored five goals, including the 150th of his career. Rochester rookie Jordan McBride scored four goals in his MLL debut while second-year attacker Ned Crotty added two goals and one assist for the Rattlers.

Rattlers attacker Jordan McBride opened the scoring with a goal 2:47 into the first quarter off an assist from Martin Cahill. McBride’s goal marked the first time that Rochester had opened the scoring in a Major League Lacrosse game this year. The Boston Cannons responded with a 5-1 run to close out the first quarter. Major League Lacrosse’s leading scorer Paul Rabil had two goals and Boston attacker Matt Poskay added two more for the Cannons. Boston led the Rattlers 5-2 after the first quarter.

The Rattlers responded in the second quarter by putting together their best offensive output of the season with a 6-1 run. Rookie Jordan McBride led the way with two goals and one assist. Rochester’s leading scorer Ned Crotty added a goal and an assist. Rattlers rookie Grant Catalino added an assist.

“I thought Grant did real well. I thought he showed that he’ll be successful at this level.” Rattlers coach BJ O’Hara said.

The Boston Cannons came out of the half and responded with a 6-2 run to take a 13-10 lead at the end of the third quarter. Max Quinzani, one of Major League Lacrosse’s top scorers, had two goals and added one assist while Paul Rabil scored his third goal of the game. Mark Poskay scored his third and fourth goals of the game during Boston’s third quarter run. Poskay’s third goal was the 150th of his Major League Lacrosse career. Rochester’s Ned Crotty kept the Rattlers in touch with his second goal of the game.

The fourth quarter opened with Matt Poskay scoring his game-high fifth goal to give Boston a 14-10 lead The Rattlers responded with a goal from rookie Joel White and a two-point goal from veteran Matt Striebel cut the Cannons lead to 14-13. Matt Cahill tied the game at 14 with 5:04 remaining with his only goal of the game off an assist from McBride. Boston’s Quinzani scored the game winning goal thirty-eight seconds later and Patrick Heim added an insurance goal with just over two minutes to go to seal the victory for the Boston Cannons.

Jordan McBride finished his MLL debut with four goals and two assists for the Rattlers. “We just need to close those small gaps between winning and losing. There were times out there today when we had seven rookies, two second-year players and one veteran. We’re getting there.”
